Did the advent of coffee give birth to an enlightened western civilization? Is coffee, indeed, the substance that drives history? In his hilarious and captivating book, Stewart Lee Allen sets out to answer these profound questions. From the cliffhanging villages of Southern Yemen, where coffee was first cultivated eight hundred years ago, to a cavernous coffeehouse in Calcutta, the drinking spot for two of India’s three Nobel Prize winners . . . from the posh salons of Vienna and Paris, where the true origin of the croissant is at last revealed, to the good ol’ U.S.A., where something resembling brown water passes for coffee, Allen treks three quarters of the way around the world by train, rickshaw, cargo freighter—even mule—on a caffeinated quest to filter out the truth about the influence of coffee on society and history. The evidence of java’s influence on the world speaks for itself. When coffee was the sole provenance of the Arabs, their civilization flourished beyond all others. Once the Ottomans got hold of the bean, they became the most powerful nation on the planet. Its early appearance in Great Britain helped jump-start that nation’s drive for world dominance (Lloyd’s of London started in a coffeehouse). In Parisian cafés the French Revolution was born. During the Civil War, union soldiers were consuming the bean under the orders of President Jackson while the South, hopelessly decaffeinated by a naval embargo, went down to inglorious defeat. Taking readers around the world, Stewart Lee Allen wittily proves that the world was wired long before the Internet. And those who deny the power of coffee (namely tea-drinkers), do so at theirown peril.

The Republic Of Yemen – Turbulent Historical Past, Astounding Natural Beauty

Our world is full of incredible places to visit. One of these places is Yemen. While it generally doesn’t top the list of places to vacation, this only adds to its charm. Just because it isn’t Paris or Vienna doesn’t mean there is a lack of incredible things to see and memorable things to do. In a place like Yemen, you can experience a culture and the surrounding environment in a way it is supposed to be experienced: free of tourism. In order to start your adventure, you will need to apply for passports. Do this by going online and filling out USA passport application forms.

With online passport services you can take care of everything you need for your passport and more. This is especially a good option for those in a rush to renew their existing passport. Traditional methods can take up to 2 months to process your application, but online services offer options like one day passport renewal. With the added benefit of being able to avoid long lines, why would anyone choose anything else?!

One of the great things about Yemen is the fact that there are four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is a special honor that is given to locations in the world that have significant cultural and historical value. They are always fun to visit and well worth a trip to experience. One of these places in Yemen is the city of Sana’a. This city’s history goes as far back as 2,500 years ago! With such a long history, it comes as no surprise that it was a hub for political, religious, and economic activity. In this city there are 103 mosques, 14 hammams, and over 6,000 houses that were all constructed prior to the 11th century

Another World Heritage Site in Yemen is Shibam-Hadramout. This city is referred to as “The Manhattan of the Desert,” and it’s easy to see why. Surrounded by a thick fortified wall, the city is a prime example of vertical construction. Many of the buildings are constructed out of the side of a cliff, with others seeming to touch the sky. The town of Zabid, in the al-Hudayda Provence, is another World Heritage Site. This town is not only famous for it’s history, but it’s archeological significance as well. From the 13th to the 15th century, this town served as the capital of Yemen, and the grand architecture and buildings reflects this. The city also features an Islamic university.

The last World Heritage Site is the Socotro Archipelago. Unlike the other sites, this one is famous for it’s natural significance. Known for it’s biodiversity and raw natural beauty, this series of islands and islets has lifeforms that don’t occur anywhere else in the world: 37% of Socotra’s 825 plant species, 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species are found only on this archipelago. Many different species of land and air birds, marine life, and corals are another facet of the islands’ biodiversity.

Its safe to say that Yemen is a place where history, religion, and natural wonder collide. From the historical significance of the area, to the natural wonder, it’s a must-see for any person looking for a vacation that is off the beaten path. When you are preparing for your trip, don’t forget to make sure your passport is set. If you don’t have one, you can easily complete passport application forms online. If you need it renewed in a hurry, you can also select the one day pasport renewal option.
