 A Stranger Lies There

A Stranger Lies There

$4.49

On a very hot morning in Southern California, Tim Ryder brings his coffee out to the front porch. Before he can take a sip, he sees the dead body of a young man laid out on his lawn. Neither Tim nor his wife, Deirdre, has ever seen the man before, but the youth s death stirs up unhappy memories of the lives they were living twenty years earlier. Up to this point, they had done a good job of leaving behind their troubled pasts. Deirdre overcame her drug addiction and now worked in a clinic helping other addicts to climb out of their private hells. Tim was just a college student when he and his friends were led astray by an older man named Turret. They thought they were protesting the Vietnam War, but Turret was manipulating them in order to rob a local bank. The attempt went awry and both Turret and Tim ended up in jail. Tim s sentence was considerably shorter since he accepted a deal and testified against Turret. When a detective shows up at Tim s house, all these years later, and tells him that Turret has just been released from prison, Tim is certain that the dead body on his lawn is some kind of revenge. And maybe it s only the beginning. Tim is determined to learn who the boy is, and, in turn, what else Turret has planned. But his search will require more of him than he ever imagined. Since its beginning, the St. Martin s Press/Malice Domestic Contest has succeeded in discovering many amazing new mystery authors. Stephen Santogrossi joins that long, proud tradition with A Stranger Lies There, the prologue to what will surely be more excellent mysteries.

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes of Coffee

$154.75

This book provides an in-depth review of coffee-parasitic nematodes, which in some regions of the world have decimated plantations since late nineteenth century. Throughout its 17 chapters, written by specialists from many research institutions worldwide, this book reviews key aspects of this subject, such as taxonomy of coffee-parasitic Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus species, nematode management, interference of nematodes on coffee physiology, breeding for nematode-resistance and prospects of development of nematode-resistant transgenic coffees. Some chapters present in detail the nematode problems faced by coffee growers in all major producing countries or regions – such as Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam and Central America – and discuss the achievements of those countrieś nematologists towards minimizing yield losses.

Meet Hiro. She’s tall, lanky and awkward—a twenty-something Japanese woman who has decamped to Vietnam from Tokyo to work as a language teacher.  Meet Dung. She’s shy, beautiful, and tough—a young Vietnamese woman studying Japanese, determined to create a better life for herself and her family. When Dung becomes one of Hiro’s students, they are instantly drawn to each other. For both of them, it is their first time in love with another woman. But when Konno, an older Japanese businessman, befriends Hiro, Dung begins to grow unbearably jealous. What unfolds is a love triangle with very complicated, ultimately devastating, results.  Set against the backdrop of a Vietnam on the economic rise, debut novelist Aska Mochizuki vividly brings to life the buzz of motorcycles and the tastes of Vietnamese coffee and spicy papaya salads; the confines of the Vietnamese family; the lingering effects of long wars; the rich who ride the economic wave and the poor who are left behind. Spinning Tropics is a lush and evocative story of an intoxicating love affair.

The U.S. Navy in the Vietnam War: An Illustrated History

$10.15

Edward J. Marolda skillfully blends superb research and writing with an excellent mix of photographs and combat art depicting Navy ships, aircraft, facilities, and people. As one reviewer wrote, It documents a valiant, dedicated, and professional performance by our Navy and Marine Corps warriors, and it is hard not mentally to contrast this performance with the bumbling and inept management of the war by the politicians. Much more than a coffee-table book, this volume is a tribute to the men and women who served in America’s longest war.

Told in an abrasive, uncommon voice, the novel When covers a four-day period following the death of a family patriarch, or at the time when his body, as one does when having coffee poured into their cup, said “when” regarding its stay on earth. Concerned with the minutia of every day life and thinking, When is universal in the themes it touches upon: Vietnam, enemas, Jesus as a black man, pancakes, art, rape, legal drinking, speaking in tongues, Flintstone Vitamins, cinema, abortion, etc. And the main character, as his memory continues to grow stronger with the help of his somewhat disturbed grandmother and the recollections from the weekend spent with his three siblings leading up to their father’s burial, figures out that the little things in life, such as how people react when others say “when,” are exactly those things which are, without a doubt, the most engaging.

Please tell me what can i do to win her heart!!!?

I am living in Vietnam, i am Vietnamese. I met an American woman, she is 5 years older than me! She is working and living in Vietnam right now, and she wanna live here for good! I saw her and talked to her probably 1 years, we did not talk much! 4 moths lately we have been talking alot, drinking coffee one a week, talking on phone 2 hours a day – 3 times a week! i think we are getting closer! I do ask her about can we go further than a friendship, but she said “no, we are just friends, i really enjoy our friendship, i have fun , and you are a cool guy, smart, but we are just friends”. You know, before when i invited her for coffee she allways said “no, i will not never hang out with just only one guy, that is my rule and it is wise”. But now, we together drink coffee and sometimes i can even touch her hair, we seem to be very close. she is making me confusing! Could time changes her mind? Could i change her mind? Time goes by and i love her more and more! and i hurt myheart, help me!

you seem to be going too fast for her. take it slow. look at you guys now. before she always said “no” to getting coffee now you do it every week. win her heart slowing. treat her like you love her. but dont tell her you like her. it’ll make things awkward [weird]. just be friends first. it works if you guys were really meant for eachother.

Maui Waterfall Hikes, Trails, And Tours

Are you ready to enjoy a wilderness full of beauty, fun, romance and adventure? Have you yet to see the real, wild Maui? If this sparks your interest, sign up for the Hana Full-Day Waterfalls & Rain Forest Hike!

On this tour you’ll explore the real Hawaii on a 4 1/2-mile hike through a lush rainforest and vast forests of towering bamboo, to gigantic Maui waterfalls 200 to 400 feet high. Maui’s Haleakala National Park houses these awe-inspiring waterfalls, which are situated 30 minutes past Hana, in the very centre of East Maui’s Hawaiian area of Kipahulu.

An air-conditioned van tour will take you from Central Maui along the world-renowned Road to Hana, across its 50 one-lane bridges, and along its 600 curves. By simply watching outside the windows, you’ll be able to view the sea, beaches, valleys and waterfalls. Passing through several different climate zones on your 2.5 hour jungle journey, you will be served fresh-ground coffee and a continental breakfast prior to reaching the trailhead above the Seven Sacred Pools.

From that point, you’ll walk along tidy park trails following Maui’s most beautiful stream – a system of pools and waterfalls. Like all national parks, this is a fantastic setting – but unlike others, Hana is under a thick tropical canopy, through a huge bamboo forest, past spectacular cascading waterfalls.

To create an experience that is exciting and educational too, a friendly, knowledgeable naturalist-guide will lead you through Maui’s rain forest. Ranging from botanists to hula dancers, your guide or guides will integrate the delight of hiking in an unspoiled tropical wilderness with botany, culture, history and geology.

Find out first-hand why so many of the birds, insects and plants, are found nowhere else on the planet but here. You may even come upon the endemic Hawaiian Goose – the Nene – Hawaii’s state bird, as you climb to the base of a ginormous 400-foot waterfall for a picnic lunch.

In 1980, Hike Maui founder Ken Schmitt hitched up a backpack and left a successful city life to live in the jungles of East Maui. Prior to sharing his treasure with others, Ken stayed in Maui venturing into nature, and living outdoors for three years. His wife, MJ Harden, met Ken in 1984 while writing for the San Francisco Examiner, and joined Hike Maui full-time ten years later. She continues to write and has won numerous awards for writings about the culture of Hawaii.

Together, Ken and MJ have created one of the most respected land tour companies in Hawaii over the past 27 years. There’s no better place to go for Maui eco tours, as Hike Maui was awarded the 2009 Eco Company of the Year by the Maui News, and the 2010 Eco-Tourism Operator of the Year.

Ken’s staff members all have a mission that of giving Maui visitors the most amazing experience of their vacation… and possibly their lives. Ken was initially the only guide, but now hires a dozen-plus staff that share his goals.

If you can find a more varied, knowledgeable and passionate group of wilderness guides anywhere, please let us know. The ones we know include:

Roger & Stephanie: Wildlife biologists; Renee: Swim coach and triathelete; Randy: Professional military; Marko: Marine biologist, teacher, firefighter; Randy: Trucker & Vietnam POW; Kristin: Alaska vet tech & dental assistant; Kahoi: Artist and a professional hula dancer; Helga: Botanist; Chris: Vice-principal and ski instructor; Akiko: Pilot and flight attendant.

Don’t forget your hiking boots or sneakers, swimsuit, sunscreen and camera if you are one of the lucky travellors to hike go on a Maui waterfall hike with any of these incredible guides. Hike Maui will provide all the rest, including air-conditioned transportation, a continental breakfast of fruit, muffins and coffee, hip packs, towels, jackets, snacks, water and a full deli lunch.

WORLD’S ICONIC DESTINATIONS RATED (National Geographic)

WASHINGTON (Oct. 21, 2009)—In conjunction with National Geographic Society’s
Center for Sustainable Destinations, National Geographic Traveler has devoted
its sixth annual “Places Rated” Destination Stewardship survey to the world’s
most celebrated and iconic travel destinations and how well they have
weathered the pressures of mass tourism and other threats.

Like the first Destination Rated survey in 2004, Norway’s fjords region has
again taken top honors, with a score of 85 points. Judges noted the gorgeous
scenery and well-preserved rural life that are vigorously protected. Others
making the top “Best Rated Places” category range from Japan’s ancient Kyoto
(#4, 79 points) for honoring the “serenity and charm of ancient Japan” to
Slovenia, formerly part of communist Yugoslavia, tied at #5 (78 points) for
being among the most sustainable and authentic places to visit in Europe.

The United Kingdom is the country with the most winners in this year’s top
category: England’s Yorkshire Dales, Scotland’s Highlands, and Wales.

A total of 133 destinations were surveyed by a panel of 437 well-traveled
experts in a variety of fields related to sustainable tourism. The survey is
the cover story of the November-December 2009 issue of National Geographic
Traveler magazine, on newsstands …
