Joost Conijn: Ijzer en Video/Iron and Video $45 Like many artists, Joost Conijn makes stuff. But then he turns the key in the ignition of a piece and drives it across the continent, or flies it through the African desert. In 2002, he toured Eastern Europe and the Ukraine in a DIY car, Hout Auto, built from wood and fueled with logs that he gathered along the way. He passed through Albania and Romania and even penetrated, under alternative power, the area around Chernobyl. In 2000, his airplane, also homemade, took to the air above the Moroccan desert following a long struggle with the elements. He also works in film, and his recent Siddieqa, Firdaus, Abdallah, Soelayman, Moestafa, Hawwa en Dzoel-kif (2004), about seven children from a Dutch family with Islamic religious convictions, recently prompted a great deal of discussion. Iron and Video is many books in one: an instruction manual, a travelogue, a coffee-table trophy, a tale of adventure, a manifesto and altogether a fascinating read. |
Looking for a site that compares cost of USA groceries with other countries?
I am making a research dvd for my children and I would like information on what potatoes, an apple, sugar, coffee, milk , eggs, a postage stamp, an apartment rental or single family home , a new car, etc. would cost in France, Ukraine, Borneo, Turkey and Italy. An example might be a cup of coffee in USA is $1.20 what would it cost in those countries. Travel logs have not been much help. Is there a site that compares prices of common goods in other countries with those in the United States? Thank you for any direction. Karen

First Date With Russian Girls
Now that you have established correspondence with some beautiful Russian/Ukrainian ladies you are taking the big step of making your first trip to Ukraine or Russia. What should you do and how should you get ready for your first meeting?
If you are not meeting your lady at the marriage agency office then likely, for a first meeting, she is going to want to meet you at a public location. You don’t know the city well enough to pick her up at her place (and likely she doesn’t want you to know yet where she lives). Phone her (or ask someone to help you) and make plans for a time and location to meet that will be easy for both of you to find. Double-check that both of you understand. Let your lady know what you are planning, in general, for you first date together.
On your introductory date most trustworthy Ukrainian and Russian girls won’t be against taking a walk in fact they love strolling by foot) or having a chat while eating dessert and sipping a coffee or tea. If she insists on meeting at (or in front of) an expensive restaurant or nightclub get your red flags up! Don’t be timid and tell her that you such an envirnonment is not appropriate for a first date. If she still insists, dump her, no question about it.
How well will she be able to communicate in your language? How well do you speak her language? How good are you at communicating with body language? Your answers to these will determine if you should have an interpreter.
An hour or two before you are to meet her, call and confirm your meeting. This is important! Ukrainian and Russian women are known to change their plans at the last minute and not show up for the date so why squander your time? If it were me, I would not hesitate to dump any woman who cancelled at the last moment or did not come at all. In most cases the excuse is predicatable (someone showed up unexpectedly or got sick), which translates to “I am really not so serious about meeting with you”. If there is no doubt in your mind that one of her relatives or close friends had an accident or died then proceed to make plans for a date later.
Get dressed for your date. The ladies like a well-dressed man so don’t dress like you are going to the gym! Russian and Ukrainian men tend to dress less casual than us. Most times I can spot a foreigner on the street without even seeing their face just by how sloppy they are dressed compared to everyone else.
Show up at the meeting place (or marriage agency office) on time. The advantage of getting to the marriage agency office early is you can get a look at the women entering and exiting while you wait. There is a double standard in Russian and Ukraine. While the chance of your lady arriving on time to your meeting is close to ZERO you will be in big trouble if you show up late. I think the idea is to make you wait so that you appreciate her more when she finally arrives..
If you are greeting her with flowers be sure it is an odd number (a cultural superstition). I am not crazy about presenting flowers on the first date unless it is a lady whom I have developed a “connection” with by phone or writing beforehand. I feel it is more appropriate as an expression of feelings after you have developed a relation with your Ukrainian lady.
Then go for a walk (it is appropriate for you to offer and for her hold your arm). When accompanied by an interpreter they should stand on the other side of your Russian lady. Neither between you or beside you. Not beside you because you want to be looking at your lady when speaking! Not between you as that puts a wall (physical and emotional) between you and your date.
If you or your lady are getting tired or cold/hot (depending on time of year) then you can suggest sitting down in a café for drink. I don’t recommend trying to impress her with your material wealth. Nearly all Ukrainian and pretty russian girls looking for a foreigner are looking for financial stability but they don’t like when you brag about it.
The same advice I would give for a first date anywhere in the world, keep the date relatively short. This creates anticipation for the next meeting (but is a problem if your trip is for a short time). If the chemistry is incredible then let it ride, it is certainly not unacceptable for a Ukrainian or Russian woman to sleep with you on the first date if she is really in to you. And vice versa, if there is no chemistry or if it is obvious she is scamming you then don’t be afraid to just end the date. Tell her that you don’t feel there is chemistry between you and thank her for time.
If your date with your Ukrainian girl went well and you really like her then don’t be shy to let her know that you want to have another date with her and also try to make plans for your next date. If she can not say at the present moment then ask when would be a convenient time to phone her. Do your best to get some kind of promise from her. If she is evasive then probably she is not as fond of you as you are of her. In that case, consider this date a learning experience and invest your efforts with a different lady.
Tell Me Tonight – Russian Terms Of Endearment
Russian passion in-between the sheets
From the bar to the restaurant to the bedroom, falling in love and starting a relationship with a Russian woman is an intensely passionate and thrilling experience. Although Russia has now embraced Western technology, fashion and music, romantic tradition and gentlemanly conduct is still a standard when dating a Russian lady. So be sure to arrive with plenty of manners, chivalrous intent and an adventurous spirit.
Always help with her coat, forget going dutch, and make sure you regularly treat her to some beautiful flowers. And should you play your cards right, then it’s highly likely that a similar rapport will spill over into bedroom action.
Of course, learning a few well-chosen phrases and words should bring sparkle, desire and twinkling humor to your love making and make sure that unlimited pleasure is the name of the game in-between the sheets.
And if you find the right words to win the heart of a Russian lady in and out the sack, you might well end up saying ‘I do’ at the end of a long aisle. Or should that be Да?

Man Faces Caning For Touching Flight Attendant (Aero News)
Ukrainian National Accused Of Crossing The Line On Singapore Airlines Some
guys just haven’t caught on that the days of “coffee, tea or me” are over. The
online edition of the Strait Times reports that 35-year-old Sierkov Sergii,
described as a sales manager from the Ukraine, was arrested by authorities in
Singapore after he allegedly touched a flight attendant inappropriately during
a Singapore Airlines flight from Moscow on November 15.
