The Biggest Development Sectors in Kenya
Kenya has three sectors that are to be hailed for being the backbone of the economy. They include tourism, agriculture, industry and manufacturing. Tourism has been the biggest boost and contributes more than 67 percent of the GDP. The sector that has been on for years since independence has risen to see Kenya become a favorite tourist destination in East African Region. This has also been coupled by the favorite environment that allows the cold and warm seasons to continue uninterrupted. Kenya earns over US$800 from the tourism industry. The next industry that comes closer to this is the agriculture. The principal cash crops in the country include tea, coffee, horticultural produce and pyrethrum. Horticultural produce and tea are the driving force behind the sector. They account for over 50% of the exports that the country carries out. Livestock production has also received a major boost and most farmers keep high grade cattle. In fact the recent years has resulted to overproduction of milk and other daily products. Other staple foods that dominate the country include maize, beans, millet and potatoes. Kenya’s industrial and manufacturing sector is also doing very fine. The industry accounts for around 15% of there Gross Domestic Product [GDP]. The industry is mainly concentrated in Nairobi, Thika, Kisumu and Mombasa. In Nairobi, there is large part set aside for industries known as Industrial Area. This is where most big factories are based. Kenya is a member of organizations like AGOA meaning African Growth and Opportunity Act that provides market for imported goods. Clothing industry accounts for the highest sales in exports and employ the most people.
