1833 Works $21.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The “Word of Wisdom” is the common name of a section of the Doctrine and Covenants, a book considered by many churches within the Latter Day Saint movement to consist of revelations from God. It is also the name of a health code based on this scripture, practiced most strictly by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and to a lesser extent, some other Latter Day Saint denominations. In the LDS Church, compliance with the Word of Wisdom is currently a prerequisite for baptism, service in missionary work, attendance at church schools, and entry into the church’s temples; however, violation of the code is not considered to be grounds for excommunication or other disciplinary action. The scripture discourages “hot drinks”, the non-medicinal use of tobacco, the consumption of wine (excluding sacramental wine) or “strong drinks”, and the consumption of meat, except sparing use only in time of winter or famine. The scripture also recommends the consumption of herbs, fruits, and grains, as well as grain-based “mild drinks”. As practiced by the LDS Church, there is no firm restriction relating to meat consumption, but there are additional restrictions against narcotics, and all alcoholic beverages are forbidden, including “mild drinks” such as beer. The LDS Church interprets “hot drinks” to mean coffee and tea (except herbal tea). According to Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, the Word of Wisdom was received in 1833 as a revelation from God. After Smith’s death, Brigham Young stated that the revelation was given in response to problems encountered while conducting meetings in the Smith family home: “When they assembled together in this room after breakfast, the first they did was to light their pi… More: |

A Cafecito Story/El Cuento Del Cafecito $3.16 “A Cafecito Story” is a story of love, coffee, birds and hope. It is a beautifully written eco-fable by best-selling author Julia Alvarez. Based on her and her husband’s experiences trying to reclaim a small coffee farm in her native Dominican Republic, “A Cafecito Story” shows how the return to the traditional methods of shade-grown coffee can rehabilitate and rejuvenate the landscape and human culture, while at the same time preserving vital winter habitat for threatened songbirds. Not a political or environmental polemic, “A Cafecito Story” is instead a poetic, modern fable about human beings at their best. The challenge of producing coffee is a remarkable test of our ability to live more sustainably, caring for the land, growers, and consumers in an enlightened and just way. Written with Julia Alvarez’s deft touch, this is a story that stimulates while it comforts, waking the mind and warming the soul like the first cup of morning coffee. Indeed, this story is best read with a strong cup of organic, shade-grown, fresh-brewed coffee. |

The Hova government maintained, until the French conquest, a garrison of from two to three hundred men at Tamatave. These troops had their quarters close to the fort, in a number of houses placed in rows and enclosed in a large square or rdva, formed of strong wooden palisades, with gateways. The following day was occupied in making preparations for the journey, purchasing a few of the most necessary articles of crockery, etc., and unpacking my canteen. This latter was a handsome teak box, and fitted up most neatly with plates, dishes, knives and forks, etc. But Mr Plant said that both the box and most of its contents were far too good to be exposed to the rough usage they would undergo on the journey; so I took out some of the things and repacked the box in its wooden case. Subsequent experience showed the wisdom of this advice, and that it was a mistake to use too expensive articles for such travelling as that in Madagascar, or to have to spend much time in getting out and putting in again everything in its proper corner. Upon reaching the halting-place after a fatiguing journey of several hours, it is a great convenience to get at one’s belongings with the least possible amount of exertion ; and when starting before sunrise in the mornings, it is not less pleasant to be able to dispense with an elaborate fitting of things into a canteen. By my friend’s advice, I therefore bought a three-legged iron pot for cooking fowls, some common plates, and a tin coffee-pot, which also served asa teapot when divested of its percolator. These things were stowed away in a mat bag, which proved the most convenient form of canteen possible for such a journey The contents were quickly put in, and as readily got out when wanted; and, thus provided, we felt prepared to expl |

A Winter In London; Or, Sketches Of Fashion $14.14 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER II. THE POUDER OF A FAMILY. ickens, the gentleman to whose villa the Laurences now steered their little vessel, laden with fish for his table, was universally known as one of the wealthiest commoners in England. There were not wanting, however, some persons with strong memories, who recollected that the origin of the wealthy banker was far from splendid. In truth, the first property acquired by the father of Mr. Dickens was obtained by the application of his talents and industry to the useful employments of cleaning boots and shoes and knives and forks, at a public house hi the neighbourhood of Newgate Market. Ned Dickens was indebted to Yorkshire for his birth, parentage and education, and was a firm and sincere professor of that celebrated creed, ” that pence get shillings, and shillings get pounds” This faith enabled him to endure with patience and humility many a cuff and kick, and cheered him under many a cloud of brickdust. Thus a few years’ devotion to these pursuits enabled Ned Dickens to become a creditor of the nation, to the amount of fifty pounds Five per Cent. Stock, and promoted him to the rank of waiter. The same saving faith still urged him onward in the rich man’s progress, and shielded him from all temptation to turn aside. ” A penny saved ‘s a penny got,” often rang in his ears, as he cast his little eyes upon the spruce garments of a brother waiter at a neighbouring coffee-house, and then surveyed his own old suit of greasy corderoy. . ., To all this personal merit, Fortune added her blind boon, by rendering the existing circumstances precisely such as best agreed with his peculiar genius and disposition. ‘” His master died, and bequeathed all his .’ right and title to the house, and the good-will of the trade, to his beloved wid… |

What Makes Asian Coffee Different?
Like many countries throughout the world, the habit of drinking coffee is also developed in Asia. Café Serving Coffee is also growing in number. In Singapore, for example it’s common to see coffee shops packed at midnight every night of the week including weekends. This experience is replicated across many countries in the region from India to Malaysia, Vietnam to Indonesia. Asian coffee shops, as in many other countries, are more about the gathering of friends for a social event than about the coffee itself.
People believe that Asian coffee culture has sprung up so quickly because there are so many Asians who bring back the idea of developing coffee-shops from visits to Europe and America. It is obvious that America and Europe both have extremely strong coffee cultures, and Asia is coming in a close second in having more and more coffee drinkers.
Asia is actually catching on to all of the trends. Right now currently, Indonesia, China, and the Philippines are actually some of the biggest coffee drinkers in all of Asia. In China, for illustration only, roughly 1/3 of all adults are drinking coffee in corner coffee houses.
Not like most of the countries, coffee shops in Asian countries are not only selling imported coffees as those sold at Starbucks and so on. They also serve their own traditional coffee. Coffee shops in Indonesia, for instance, besides offering Cappuccino, Espresso, Moccachino as well as the famous Arabica and Robusta, also serve the brewed of Java Coffee. This is the distinguished strong and black coffee produced on the island of Java. At the same time different coffee shops trying to offer Sumatera Coffee and Aceh Coffee; both are the sweetest and the cleanest Indonesian coffee beans which are grown in the western part of the country.
There are many other types of coffee offered by the coffee shops in Indonesia, for example the East Timor Coffee which comes from the eastern part of this country, and the Toraja Coffee from the island of Sulawesi. There is also Bali Coffee that served in almost every cafes and hotels in Bali. Bali coffee is also widely used as souvenirs for tourists.
The renown Luwak Coffee (Kopi Luwak) which is considered the most expensive coffee in the world, is also coming from Indonesia soil. Luwak is Palm Civet, the animal that eats raw red coffee cherries and subsequently excretes them to be gathered by the locals. The beans are still covered by inner layers of the cherry and are carefully washed and sanitized. To manage this unique coffee, The Luwak Coffee Company was founded in 1999 in Central Java.
