Barcelona Hotels And Food To Keep The Cold At Bay.
It can be quite cold in Spain in the winter time and visitors staying at Barcelona hotels should remember to pack some warm winter clothes. The Spanish traditionally eat a lot of hearty, meaty stews and soups in the winter time as not only does it warm them up but is good comfort food as well. A typical stew is called ‘Puchero’ and it uses a variety of meats and vegetables. The stew has the warming spices of peppercorns and cloves added to it as well as salt. Nothing is wasted from this thick stew as after serving, any remaining meat and vegetables are removed, left to drain and then made into croquettes. Even the broth left in the stew pot isn’t wasted but turned into soup with the addition of more chickpeas and seasoning. Gazpacho is another Spanish favourite winter meal. Flat, round bread called ‘Torta’ is broken up and added to meat stews to thicken them up. Torta used to be made in every Spanish kitchen but nowadays most supermarkets sell it.
Probably the most famous item in Spanish cuisine has to be the tapas and in the winter, people opt for the more spicy, warming ones. You can always tell a Spanish clam as they tend to be much bigger and succulent than clams found elsewhere. Stuffed clams are a tapas made with fiery Arab spices in a rich, tangy sauce and served with lots of bread to mop up the juices. The classic tapa of patatas bravas is hot and spicy, fried potatoes in a rich chili sauce, just the thing for keeping the winter chill out.
Visitors from Costa Brava hotels in the winter time will see the Christmas pastries, Alfajors for sale in the local bakeries. Containing warming spices like ginger, cinnamon and cloves and made from flour, almonds and honey, they are healthy treat for the winter. Needless to say, the Spanish who love to drink have devised various warming spirits with the sole intention of keeping you warm in the winter. Queimada is an alcoholic punch, originally made in Galicia. Made from a spirit distilled from wine, it is flavoured with special herbs, coffee, sugar, lemon peel and cinnamon. Orjo is a lethal transparent spirit derived from wine pomace and is best avoided by those on hotel deals to Spain in the winter. It is 100 degrees proof and sold in shot glasses.
