Big Green Purse: Use Your Spending Power to Create a Cleaner, Greener World $0.01 Protecting our environment is one of the biggest issues facing our planet today. But how do we solve a problem that can seem overwhelming-even hopeless? As Diane MacEachern argues in Big Green Purse, the best way to fight the industries that pollute the planet, thereby changing the marketplace forever, is to mobilize the most powerful consumer force in the world-women. MacEachern’s message is simple but revolutionary. If women harness the “power of their purse” and intentionally shift their spending money to commodities that have the greatest environmental benefit, they can create a cleaner, greener world. Spirited and informative, this book: – targets twenty commodities-cars, cosmetics, coffee, food, paper products, appliances, cleansers, and more-where women’s dollars can make a dramatic difference; – provides easy-to-follow guidelines and lists so women can choose the greenest option regardless of what they’re buying, along with recommended companies they should support; – encourages women to spend wisely by explaining what’s worth the premium price some green products cost, what’s not, and when they shouldn’t spend money at all; and – differentiates between products that are actually “green” and those that are simply marketed as “ecofriendly.” Whether readers want to start with small changes or are ready to devote the majority of their budget to green products, MacEachern offers concrete and immediate ways that women can take action and make a difference. Empowering and enlightening, Big Green Purse will become the “green shopping bible” for women everywhere who are asking, “What can I do?” |

Chasing Neotropical Birds $34.95 From Belize to Brazil, the forests of the American neotropics are home to an astonishing array of birds–over 3,700 different species, or nearly 40 percent of all the birds on earth. Because of this overwhelming abundance, birders come from all over the world to try to catch glimpses of species that can be found nowhere else, such as toucans and antbirds, motmots and manakins, bellbirds and cocks-of-the-rock, and practically all of the planet’s hummingbirds. Two such birding enthusiasts are Vera and Bob Thornton, who have spent fifteen years photographing these special and exotic birds in the rainforests of eleven different countries of Central and South America. In this book, you’ll find more than a hundred spectacular color photographs they took during their travels, along with a highly entertaining account of their adventures–and misadventures–in chasing these exotic neotropicals. The birds pictured here are among the Thorntons’ personal favorites–birds that, in their words, “either dazzled us with their beauty, or charmed us by their behavior, or, in a few cases, simply challenged us by the mystique of their rarity.” This latter category includes such elusive and sought-after birds as the Black-crowned Antpitta, the Zigzag Heron, the Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo, the Bare-necked Umbrellabird, and the monkey-eating Harpy Eagle. In the accompanying text, Bob Thornton engagingly describes the challenges as well as the magic of negotiating the neotropical rainforests in search of colorful birds to photograph. For those who would like to follow in the Thorntons’ footsteps, there are also helpful tips about photographic gear and techniques, preferred places to see the birds, lodging, and guides. For everyone who enjoys excellent nature photography, Chasing Neotropical Birds is a must-have volume on the coffee table or in the library. |

Confessions of an Eco-Sinner: Tracking Down the Sources of My Stuff $16 Where does everything in our daily lives come from? The clothes on our backs, the computers on our desks, the cabinets in our kitchens, and the food behind their doors? Under what conditions-environmental and social-are they harvested or manufactured? Veteran science journalist Fred Pearce set off to find out, and the resulting 100,000-mile journey took him to the end of his street and across the planet to more than twenty countries. Pearce deftly shows us the hidden worlds that sustain a Western lifestyle, and he does it by examining the sources of everything in his own life; as an ordinary citizen of the Western world, he, like all of us, is an “eco-sinner.” In Confessions of an Eco-Sinner, Pearce surveys his home and then launches on a global tour to track down, among other things, the Tanzanians who grow and harvest his fair-trade coffee (which isn’t as fair as one might hope), the Central American plantations that grow his daily banana (a treat that may disappear forever), the women in the Bangladeshi sweatshops who sew his jeans, the Chinese factory cities where the world’s computers are made, and the African afterlife for old cell phones. It’s a fascinating portrait, by turns sobering and hopeful, of the effects the world’s more than 6 billion inhabitants-all eating, consuming, making-have on our planet, and of the working and living conditions of the people who produce most of these goods. |

Devil’s Cup: A History of the World According to Coffee $2.02 Did the advent of coffee give birth to an enlightened western civilization? Is coffee, indeed, the substance that drives history? In his hilarious and captivating book, Stewart Lee Allen sets out to answer these profound questions. From the cliffhanging villages of Southern Yemen, where coffee was first cultivated eight hundred years ago, to a cavernous coffeehouse in Calcutta, the drinking spot for two of India’s three Nobel Prize winners . . . from the posh salons of Vienna and Paris, where the true origin of the croissant is at last revealed, to the good ol’ U.S.A., where something resembling brown water passes for coffee, Allen treks three quarters of the way around the world by train, rickshaw, cargo freighter—even mule—on a caffeinated quest to filter out the truth about the influence of coffee on society and history. The evidence of java’s influence on the world speaks for itself. When coffee was the sole provenance of the Arabs, their civilization flourished beyond all others. Once the Ottomans got hold of the bean, they became the most powerful nation on the planet. Its early appearance in Great Britain helped jump-start that nation’s drive for world dominance (Lloyd’s of London started in a coffeehouse). In Parisian cafés the French Revolution was born. During the Civil War, union soldiers were consuming the bean under the orders of President Jackson while the South, hopelessly decaffeinated by a naval embargo, went down to inglorious defeat. Taking readers around the world, Stewart Lee Allen wittily proves that the world was wired long before the Internet. And those who deny the power of coffee (namely tea-drinkers), do so at theirown peril. |

Interesting Coffee Knowledge
Among the list of millions of refreshments worldwide there is one permanent that plenty of people prefer in the early morning and that is coffee. It helps to keep your brain attentive and also at the same time calming in a unique way. I assume that’s the reason they make cafes as a slow paced relaxing spot to chat in. It is a beveragethat’s been reinvented for a great number of times yet everyone still has a favorite they keep but still willing to check out other tastes. And how to make good coffee? It might depend on more than just the coffee maker, secret brew or extra flavors it also is about the fantastic people who you share coffee with.
A cup of coffee is deemed to be the most popular beverage on the planet and approximately two billion Coffee cups are consumed every morning alone. A cup of coffee is also the 2nd most precious commodity on the market and 2nd only to oil. With this much popularity and demand it gets me curious where it originated. Legend has it that a goat herder from Ethiopia came upon coffee about 850 AD. Coffee received its first attention when the Arabs started growing them in the fifteenth and sixteenth century. Eventually it made its way to Italy from where the first European coffee house unveiled in 1645. Following that the rest was history.
Much like grapes there are also many types of coffee beans and lots of styles and methods to roast them. We have developed gadgets to make brewing them taste more desirable. Considering the variety of different coffee brews and processes exactly what is an Espresso and just what sets it apart from normal coffee? The initial difference is in the creation and cooking of the coffee beans. You might already know makers of coffee keep their drying and cooking an extremely well guarded secret but an espresso is roasted much longer thanregular coffee up until the beans have become dark and almost oily. The grind of any espresso class coffee is fine. The reason why is because the finer it is the more pressure it requires and the slower the coffee discharges out which makes for an excellent shot of espresso.
Another apparent difference is in how they are served and prepared. Coffee can be brewed pretty much anyway you want it but an espresso is produced whenever you take those finely ground beans and put it under substantial hot water pressure. It is served either as a single shot or double shot which deviates not in your amount of water or cups but the volume of espresso coffee beans squeezed in a single press of espresso cup.
