The Portuguese in San Leandro by Edition ILL, 0 $22.49 The Gold Rush drew the Portuguese from the Azores, sweeping them across the Atlantic Ocean and around South America's Cape Horn to the California shore. When gold failed to pan out, many Portuguese moved to the hamlet of San Leandro on the San Francisco Bay where land was reasonable and the ground fertile. Gradually the post-Gold Rush settlers joined with former Portuguese shore whalers to farm the fields of San Leandro. San Leandro became a principal landing place for newly arrived Portuguese immigrants putting down roots on small farms. A steady stream of relatives from the Azores and Hawaii poured into San Leandro's fertile foothills, and by 1911 the Portuguese comprised over two-thirds of the city's population. The early days were rough–Portuguese immigrants banded together in fraternal societies to overcome a lack of resources and to help one another navigate a strange world whose language they did not speak. Today the Portuguese Immigrant monument in Root Park's plaza commemorates the journey of Portuguese settlers who left everything behind to start a new life in the new world. |

Croatia’s Innovative Tourism Project To Make The World’s Largest Welcome Leaves The Island Of Hvar And Heads For The Peljesac Spur.
Day 46 of Croatia’s cutting edge tourism project, to create the planet’s largest welcome, began on the island of Hvar on May twenty-six 2011 with a visit to a rock climbing facility. The purpose of the 62-day project is to focus on both the natural beauty of Croatia and the diverse nature of its adventure tourism by following a winding, 2,500km route from north to south which spells the word “Welcome.”
Rock climbing is an expanding activity on the island, according to Vese Huljic, who runs the island’s most successful active tourism company, Hvar Adventure . According to Huljic, the sport is comparatively new to the island, with the first bolted rock climbing areas appearing in 2002.
The Welcome team visited the southern resort of Sveta Nedjelja, where they spent time at the rock climbing centre Cliffbase, owned and run by a Slovakian fan, before continuing on their journey on the road to Sucuraj and transfer to the mainland.
A main part of the trip is to follow a route which spells the word Welcome so that it will finally be seen from Google Earth, enabling Croatian tourism to claim the biggest welcome in the world. Implementing this in practical terms needs backtracking sometimes.
Heading north to Makarska to join up the “M” in welcome, the Welcome team then planned a 25km cycle to Blato and kayak from there to Loviste, but opted for the kayaks earlier thanks to the business of the key road.
With the impressive Biokovo mountains as a background, the team paddled past countless empty beaches, shortly to be crowded in the imminent top season, evidence of the shortness of the Croatian season, regardless of usually wonderful weather in late May.
The final destination, through the channel between Hvar and Peljesac, was the quaint hamlet of Loviste on the western tip of the Peljesac Peninsula. Given its comparatively remote location (tourists arriving by car must drive the length of the promontory), Loviste is less crowded than other places on the coast and offers good beaches and coves.
The Welcome team were greeted by enthused local kids and Stjepan Rudan, President of the local council, and enjoyed a table of local figs and brandy.
The tour is lined up to continue by kayak to the island of Korcula, birthplace of Marco Polo, before finishing on June three with a kayak leg from the island of Mljet to Dubrovnik, writes tagza.com.
