Driving High (and Low) On Sugar

I have successfully been on a low carb diet plan for quite a bit now and suddenly notice that I do not get sleepy on long trips. Before this diet, driving would make me constantly drowsy. I live in Texas (with its long highways) where one of our favorite old tunes is “Miles and Miles of Texas” by the band, Asleep at the Wheel. It’s exactly on target. I’d yawn continually and drink coffee after coffee to try and stay awake.

What I was doing before I started my low carbohydrate way of life, was eat sugary candy and snacks while on the road. Now, with none of that sugar, I just don’t get sleepy. It’s amazing! So why has this occurred?

Before the low carb diet plan, I was a victim of a mild form of sugar addiction. I was eating all that sugar, while thinking that I would get energy from it. Sadly it had just the opposite effect. When sugar and/or candy are consumed, they almost immediately are digested and flow into the blood vessels as blood sugar (glucose). Glucose has noticeably negative impacts on the body in several ways if it is authorized to build up to a certain density in the bloodstream. To prevent this, a hormone called Insulin is secreted by the pancreas into the blood vessels to get rid of glucose if too much gets into the blood vessels (as an example after I wolf down a monster sweet roll). Sadly, two, different bad side effects take place then: 1) that extra glucose is turned into fat to get it out of the bloodstream and 2) the pancreas over-reacts to that sinful sweet roll and removes all the glucose from my bloodstream. So I'm left about an hour after that sweet roll with no blood sugar in my bloodstream and no energy to remain awake!

I’m proud to say that I’ve kept my weight down reasonably well with my low carb diet plan hence, as a consequence, became a bit too confident on a recent recent road trip in West Texas. We stopped at an old fashioned cafe early in the morning and I just couldn't resist getting a delicious sweet roll (actually an almond twist). I wolfed that thing down and inside an hour was not so lively any more. I was beat, yawning, and gulping down coffee but still sleepy. It took nearly all day to wind down from it because I attempted to overcome the sleepiness by eating even more sugar.

How easily we forget! Well, I am back to my good habits now “of avoiding those tempting sweet treats”. Lesson Learned!
