Voicing American Poetry: Sound and Performance from the 1920's to the Present

Voicing American Poetry: Sound and Performance from the 1920′s to the Present

$20.95

The most interesting tensions and ambitions of twentieth-century American poetry intersect in one resonant word: voice. The term “poetic voice” emphasizes poetry’s reliance on sound, which is prominent in ethnic American writings, new formalism, and many species of performance and sound-directed poetry, both mainstream and avant-garde. However, voice is also a metaphor for originality, personality, and the illusion of authorial presence within printed poetry-meanings that have been particularly useful (and provocative) in literary criticism and creative writing. In Voicing American Poetry, Lesley Wheeler explores how and why American poetry of the twentieth century and beyond keeps returning to voice as an idea, even though the term frustrates definition. Poetic voice is a crucial term precisely because of its ambiguity: both poets and critics invoke voice to argue for poetry’s power. Because voice can also be a medium for poetry, this book offers a uniquely full history of twentieth- and twenty-first-century poetry performance in the United States. Beginning with Edna St. Vincent Millay’s captivating performances of presence on the page, the stage, and the radio, Wheeler investigates the rise of the academic poetry reading circuit and its various lively alternatives, from the Beats to the poetry-slam scene.Along the way Wheeler examines how Langston Hughes transformed oral culture into visual poetry, and how collaborative poetry challenges the very idea of self-expression. Voicing American Poetry also features an annotated list of important poetry readings in the United States since 1950. Wheeler finds that American poetry itself remains a vital, coherent enterprise and that this commitment is constantly renewed in lecture halls, auditoriums, coffee shops, bars, and classrooms.

solo musician looking for a list of music friendly coffee shops, farmer’s/crafts markets, venues?

I’d like to get booked up & down the West Coast for next year & do some traveling & playing. Anybody know of any venues I might submit a demo? My partner does beadwork so we’d like to get booked for that too.. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Austin Texas is the live music capital of the world. Your best bet is downtown, but i’m afraid I don’t know any names. Sorry it’s not on the west coast but thats all I know.

Making Your Babysitting Resume Shine

If you are looking to get a new job as a nanny or expand your babysitting client list, you would be wise to polish up your resume.  Having a professional resume that’s well written and concise is certain to attract the attention of prospective families.  There is always a lot of healthy competition for babysitting gigs, so be sure to make you as attractive as possible to land the job.

Posting a resume online is one of the best ways to get noticed.   Babysitters use a variety of methods to get the attention of prospective clients, including mega-classifieds site Craigslist and niche registries like Sittercity.com.  Social networking on Facebook and Twitter is another way to let the world know you’re ready to work.

If you’re trying to attract attention the old fashioned way, it’s a great idea to start by posting a flyer in your local community center, coffee shops, or going door-to-door to introduce yourself.   In this case, design something eye-catching with your phone or e-mail address, and save your paper resume to fax or e-mail when you get a response.

One of the fun aspects of crafting a babysitting resume is that it can be more fun than a typical professional resume.  Most people want a vivacious and happy person to care for their child, so showing your sense of fun and personality in a resume is to your benefit.  The centerpiece of your resume should be your qualifications and work experience, including references.

Under your qualifications, list how long you’ve been caring for children, and the ages with which you’re comfortable.   This is also where you’d list babysitting certification classes, as well as your CPR and First Aid training.

You’ll want to list your education and hobbies.  If you’re a student, parents are often interested to know your area of study and where you’re studying.  Include a few things you find fun and interesting as well, giving potential employers a sense of who you are.  Whether you like to sew, dance, practice yoga, or volunteer in the community, letting your potential employers know what makes you unique and special.  They’ll appreciate knowing more about the person caring for their children.

Be sure to mention if you speak any languages other than English.  It’s possible that parents may pay you extra if you can be a conversation partner for their bilingual child!

Putting together a good resume is the key to getting attention from potential employers.  Babysitting is just as challenging and fulfilling as any other kind of job, so present yourself with professionalism and you’re sure to get noticed.

Impact of Internet connection on coffee shops

Since yesterday Nov 12, 2009 I was out looking for a coffee shop with internet connection because Globelines has a problem with their service. For more than 24 hours now, we still do not have internet connection in the office.

I went to my favorite Seattle’s Best in Ayala but unfortunately they do not have internet connection either. No wonder there were only few people sipping coffee last night. Then I tried my second favorite coffee shop, The Coffee Bean. The same problem I am facing.

In a place like Cebu, there are a lot of coffee shops and most often than not, businessmen are what you likely to see in there. Seldom, you will see students. Most of all, you will see people not just sipping hot or cold coffee but they are surfing the net. Personally I go to coffee shop for two reasons. One is to relax and second is to surf the net.

Because of the incident last night and today I realize how the internet connection impacted the coffee shops with regards to getting in customers. Customers wanted more than just coffee. If you have internet connection as your value added service you will surely have a lot customers compared to those who have no such service. One time I went to Figaro Coffee Shop but they do not have that service so I never go there again. Their coffee seemed sour when I sip it without surfing the net LOL

I love to have my own coffee shop in the near future so I have to put this service as my top on the list.

Laser Surgery Is One Of The Newer Inventions of Medical Science But It Has Many Applications And The Roll Call Of Laser Treatments Continues To Expand

There are numerous types of surgery available to treat every area of the body, but one of the more recent additions to the list is laser surgery. Most people have probably heard of it, but few may realise that there are several different types of laser surgery available.

There are three main sorts of laser surgery, and the main difference between them is that they employ different types of laser, which is perhaps an obvious thing to say when considering the various areas of the human body where they can be used. The big advantage of using a laser rather than a scalpel is that there isn’t any physical contact with the body so there is very little risk of infection, plus the patient should recover more quickly too.

Hard Tissue Laser Surgery is performed – as the name suggests – on things such as bones, and more frequently, teeth. Dental functions can include early indentification of tooth decay, preparation work for fillings and treatment for temperature sensitive teeth. One of the advantages of using lasers for these procedures is that they also eradicate any bacteria in the tooth which needs the treatment, therefore also reducing the risk of the patient facing further issues.

The second type of surgery is Soft Tissue Laser Surgery. This, as the name infers, is used on softer bits of the body. It is used in Dentistry for helping the gums, but has a lot of other applications as well. These include treatments for the brain, spine and nervous system, for ears, nose and throat, for the head, neck and face, and for large areas of the torso.

The third type of surgery is probably the one which people know the most about – Laser eye surgery. There are a number of different Laser eye treatments which can be used to improve the vision of the patient. Whilst not all eye conditions can be treated by Laser eye surgery, new discoveries are being looked for in this field and there is a great chance that in the not too distant future there will be new Laser eye treatments developed, as indeed could well happen for other parts of the body as well.

There are, naturally, other kinds of laser treatment available for some parts of the body, but generally speaking most surgical uses of lasers fit into the three categories described above.
