This fascinating bookpart ethnography, part memoirtraces Japan’s vibrant caf society over one hundred and thirty years. Merry White traces Japan’s coffee craze from the turn of the twentieth century, when Japan helped to launch the Brazilian coffee industry, to the present day, as uniquely Japanese ways with coffee surface in Europe and America. White’s book takes up themes as diverse as gender, privacy, perfectionism, and urbanism. She shows how coffee and coffee spaces have been central to the formation of Japanese notions about the uses of public space, social change, modernity, and pleasure. White describes how the caf in Japan, from its start in 1888, has been a place to encounter new ideas and experiments in thought, behavior, sexuality , dress, and taste. It is where a person can be socially, artistically, or philosophically engaged or politically vocal. It is also, importantly, an urban oasis, where one can be private in public.

The City Of Kyoto, Japan – A Travel Destination With Over A Thousand Years Of Heritage

Kyoto is a city in Japan that is well known for the super modern, busy-city atmosphere that gets intermingled with the peacefulness and spirituality shrines and temples. Kyoto was actually the capital of Japan at one point, and it is very similar to the current capital, Tokyo, in many ways. Even in the middle of all the excitement of the city, you can still feel the ancient Japanese tradition. You will need a passport if you are planning on traveling to Japan, but online passport services can help you get started.

If you are looking to get your passport within a shorter amount of time, look to online passport services. Websites that specialize in passport expediting are available so that you can apply for and receive your passport as soon as you need it. All sorts of services are available from these websites, like one that can help you with renewing U S passports online or getting passports for your children.

Kyoto is a city that boasts a total of 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which is more than many countries have in total. Nijo Castle is just one of these World Heritage Sites. The entire complex was constructed in order to house the famed shoguns. Ninomaru Palace is mostly constructed out of cypress, and the other buildings feature stunning gold leaf details and wood carvings. Nishi-Hongan-ji Temple is famous for housing the oldest Noh Theatre in the world, along with many other National Treasures. The breathtaking details – such as the intricate gates that are trimmed with gold – are what make this place so special. Kamigamo Shrine is another good place to visit, as it represents the importance of religion in Japan. Not only that, but it’s incredibly beautiful as well.

If you are into Japanese culture and history, you should look into visiting the four imperial palaces and imperial villas that can be found in Kyoto. In order to get the best experience possible, it’s recommended that you go when the cherry blossoms are blooming or when the leaves are changing, Spring or Fall, respectively. Actually, Kyoto is one of the best places in the entire country to see the cherry blossoms during the Spring. Definitely make a stop at Iwatayama Monkey Park, where there are a total of 170 Japanese macaque monkeys that are very friendly towards humans. They wander the park without any walls or fences, and if you plan on visiting, be sure to bring food to feed the monkeys!

Gardens and museums are part of the cultural experience. If someone in your travel group likes trains, consider visiting the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum, where there are 19 old steam locomotives on display. Manga is a huge part of Japanese culture, and it’s becoming very popular in the United States today. The Kyoto International Manga Museum is a good stop if you have a manga fan with you. The Kyoto Botanical Garden is an absolutely stunning place to visit. The atmosphere is overwhelmingly tranquil.

As you can see, your time in Kyoto will be filled with all sorts of historical, cultural, and naturally beautiful things to see and experience. Just don’t forget to purchase a passport well in advance of your trip. If you already have one that is expired, renewing passports online is a breeze, as well.
