Where to live in Chicago for Mid 30s Couple?
My wife and I are moving to Chicago in the next 6 months. She will be working downtown and I will be working form home. We do not have any kids. What areas/neighborhoods (no subburbs) that have bookstore, coffee shops, bars etc that are “walkable” but are relatively close to the city i.e. train or bus into the city.
What are your thoughts about Rogers Park? That is an area my wife has been bringing up.
Most of Rogers Park is immigrant communities these days…south asian to the west, and hispanic on the east. But there are sections that are not mostly immigrants too. Its a very diverse place. The commute from the western parts of Rogers Park is not particularly easy because it’s not particularly close to a train, and a long way from downtown; There is a Metra train stop in the neighborhood in the northeastern section of the neighborhood, which makes downtown easy to get to. There’s also a CTA train there too. But you won’t find the same quality of bookstores in Rogers Park, that you would in Lincoln Park or Lakeview. For example, at Clark & Diversey, the border between Lincoln Park and Lakeview, you’ve got the big chains Borders & Barnes & Noble, if you’re looking for that sort of thing, but also several good used and independent bookstores within a reasonable walk, as well as many coffee shops and bars. There’s good CTA coverage in these neighborhoods, with the Red Line and buses shuttling residents downtown.
But if good bookstores is one of your most important criteria, you really need to look into Hyde Park.
