Sectional Sofas Suit Smaller Rooms
When you’re furnishing a small living space, one of the most important things to keep in mind is scale. You want each room to reflect your personality and sense of style without being overwhelmed by patterns, colors, or furniture that is too large or overpowering. Fortunately, there is furniture available to fit every space, big or small, and scaled-down, multi-use furniture is often especially designed for smaller homes.
Multi-purpose furniture can include everything from nightstands, coffee tables, and beds with built-in storage, to rolling kitchen carts with butcher-block tops for slicing and dicing. When it comes to the living room, less is definitely more. You don’t want to crowd the space with too much furniture; your goal is to create a cozy, intimate space for conversation and relaxation!
One the smartest investments you can make when decorating a smaller living room is a sectional sofa. A properly scaled-down sectional comes in two or three pieces that you can move around in different configurations that suit your needs. Where three or four pieces of furniture such as couches and overstuffed armchairs might overwhelm a small living room, a three-piece sectional can actually make the room look more spacious.
You can arrange two small sofas in an “L” shape—just right for corners—and place a chair or ottoman at an angle. Just add a coffee table and lamp, and your living room is furnished. If you’re having people over, you can move the pieces of your sectional sofa to create distinct seating and conversation areas. Or, use two small sofas as a focal point, setting them up to face each other in the center of the room. You can also use sectionals to separate the living area from the kitchen or bedroom in a studio apartment by using the sofas as a room divider. Some sectional couches even double as sofa beds so you can make room for an overnight guest or transform a living room into a bedroom in no time.
Because sectional sofas come in a wide range of sizes it’s absolutely key to measure not only the dimensions of the room, but also the staircases and doorways to make sure all the pieces will fit during the move. Once you know what size sectional sofa you want, start shopping at local home furnishing stores. Look for retailers that will let you buy or return each piece individually or as a whole. That way, if a chair or sofa is too big you can subtract it, and if you move to a larger place you can add pieces later. Some stores will even let you combine different patterns and colors of small sectional sofas so you can create your own special décor. A few good places to look for sectional sofas include IKEA, Crate & Barrel, and JC Penney.
Remember the importance of scale when choosing sofa upholstery colors and patterns. For smaller spaces, rather than selecting a sofa with a large print, try a more delicate print or pattern, or go with a bright solid color in a lush fabric, and use pillows and fabric throws to create more interest and panache.
