Monument in a Summer Hat: (Poems)

Monument in a Summer Hat: (Poems)

In James Armstrong’s pellucid poetry the drifting of autumn leaves shares space with the baroque architecture of nineteenth century England. A woman peruses a book of pharmaceuticals in a coffee shop looking for hints of happiness. And a naked woman wearing hip boots stares out of the 1940s in a photograph hung in a Michigan bar. Twilight is always moving the shadows of our urban lives out toward the country, our inherited past, where a deer or a heron waits like an angel glimpsed through the fog. Armstrong’s poems elucidate the mystery and beauty of borders- temporal and historical, as well as geographical- while his pastoral sensibility floods our senses with images of the natural world, seemingly stopping time, edifying us, and helping us-for a few moments anyway-to transcend our enervated contemporary lives. Reading this book is like diving into a deep lake. It cleanses the soul.

Mountain Time: A Novel By Ivan Doig

Mountain Time: A Novel By Ivan Doig

At fifty-something, environmental reporter Mitch Rozier has grown estranged from Seattle’s coffee shop and cyber culture. His newspaper is going under, and his relationship with Lexa McCaskill is stalled at “just living together.” Then, he is summoned by his sly, exasperating father, Lyle, back to the family land, which Lyle plans to sell in the latest of his get-rich schemes before dying. Lexa follows, accompanied by her sister Mariah, and the stage is set for long-overdue confrontations — between lovers, sisters, and father and son. Mountain Time is distinguished by humor and a wry insight into the power of family feuds to mark individuals and endure. Set against the glorious backdrop of Montana mountain country, it is a dazzling novel of love, family, and the contemporary West.

Office for Metropolitan Architects: Seattle Public Library

Office for Metropolitan Architects: Seattle Public Library

$14.95

OMA’s design for the Seattle Public Library—one of the firm’s most heavily anticipated projects to date—begins with a radical rethinking of the very nature of the library. If the library exists today as a threatened sanctuary, it has been done in by its own stubborn reliance on one kind of literacy and its consequent blindness to other emerging forms that increasingly dominate our culture, especially the huge efficiencies and pleasures of visual intelligence. Rather than merely package this traditional institution in a new way, OMA has completely reinvented it, transforming it wholeheartedly into a site able to aggressively orchestrate the coexistence of all available technologies for collecting, condensing, distributing, reading, and manipulating information. The library will no longer be loyal to the book… In more architectural terms, the $156 million building has an angular, meshlike glass and metal skin that surrounds a series of floating public spaces: a kid’s area at the bottom; a living room for browsing, public meeting areas, and a coffee shop; a mixing chamber where patrons can work intensively with librarians; and a reading room at the top with views of Mount Rainier and Puget Sound. In between these platforms are a series of programmatic boxes containing the more stable, or fixed, parts of the library program, including a continuous four-story book spiral where the entirety of the library’s books will be stored. This third book in Actar’s series of Verb monographs reveals how the Seattle Public Library works, and examines it in terms of new media technologies that have changed the status of the library in the contemporary city from a traditionalrepository for books to an “information store.” Also included is a comprehensive account of the design process, from initial concept through construction to ribbon cutting.

Author: Walsh ISBN: 0071422684 Category: Reference/Language Trim Size: 5 1/2 x 8 1/4 UPC: 639785385646 [category] Reference A thorough, and thoroughly entertaining, guide to writing like the pros What do writers and editors mean when they talk about style? Sometimes they mean formatting for consistency and clarity. (Is it Texas or Tex. or TX? One space or two after a period?) Sometimes they mean correctness in spelling, grammar, word usage and punctuation. (A historic or an historic? The data is or the data are?) And sometimes they mean style as in stylishness. (Bright and breezy or just-the-facts-ma’am? Is that cute little idea fresh and original or tired and silly?) Inside, you’ll find answers that will add polish and sparkle to your writing. In the word-nerd classic Lapsing Into a Comma, Bill Walsh of the Washington Post entertained, educated and enlightened writers, editors, students and language lovers with commonsense guidelines and opinionated commentary on American English in the computer age. In The Elephants of Style he takes a step back and presents an in-depth look at the basics, including spelling, capitalization, abbreviations, subject-verb agreement, plurals and possessives. With sometimes acerbic wit, the author also addresses: The lies your English teacher told you. Balancing the traditional (“Once wrong, always wrong”) with the progressive (“Everybody does it”) as language continues to evolve. How and why major publications differ in their handling of basic spelling, capitalization and punctuation issues. How empathy between writers and editors can make writing better. The Elephants of Style includes a continuation of The Curmudgeon’s Stylebook,Walsh’s A-to-Z glossary of style matters big and small, guaranteed to address questions that no other usage manuals cover. From the Library Journal This tale of a ravaged contemporary South Korea quickly shatters the reader’s complacency. Scott, author of Pursuing Pauline, a story of women in revolution, has written a riveting, compelling, and disturbing novel. The main characters are three Korean children who first we meet as Americanized teenagers searching for their heritage. We are quickly taken back to Seoul ten years earlier, where the story of Li Na, Dae Young, and Tae Hee unfolds. Remembering that this story takes place in contemporary times is often a difficult task because of the primitive surroundings and starvation fare. Mi Sook, the children’s mother, doomed by circumstances to fail, has to abandon the children to an orphanage where they were found by their American family. But there is more to the story, and it soon becomes evident that the children’s history will remain a mystery. Scott’s descriptive talent is enormous; at times you wish it were not so good. From Publishers Weekly After nearly 11 years with their American adoptive parents, Dae Young, 17, and his sisters Li Na, 16, and Tae Hee, 14, decide they want to know more about their ancestry. But information provided by the Korean orphanage from which the siblings were adopted doesn’t match their memories. In this atmospherically detailed and deeply felt work, the children’s quest serves as a preface to the central tale, which flashes back to South Korea a generation earlier, to recount the life of the children’s mother, Mi Sook. Abandoned as a newborn, Mi Sook is found by the wife of the owner of a coffee shop in Seoul, who keeps her in the back room of the shop and leaves her there four years later when the shop is sold. Each time the business changes hands, Mi Sook gets a new mommy who may be fond of her but never loves her. The engineering students who frequent the shop teach her to read and write, and Mi Sook, still living in the back room, eventually becomes manager. The youn

Where in Manhattan can I find a nice, cozy coffee shop with big, comfy chairs?

Something similar to Central Perk in Friends sort of vibe. Every coffee shop I seem to go to (That’s not a Starbucks) seems to have this modern contemporary vibe to it with uncomfortable seating, bright/white walls, etc…

I’d love a place, big or small, with exposed brick, a couch or lots of big comfy chairs, waiter service would be nice but is not required. Just something cute and cozy to hang out in with some friends, talk and enjoy a nice, well made soy latte.

So far the best I’ve found is Cafe Grumpy on W 20th st. While the coffee is amazing, the atmosphere still didn’t feel right for me. I want a place that makes you feel warm and happy on a cold, rainy day, etc…

Surely there’s got to be at least one in all of Manhattan!

Thank you!

Joe The Art Of Coffee – Not big comfy couches but great New York vibe, and good coffee and pastries. There are locations throughout the city:
514 Columbus Avenue
141 Waverly Place
9 East 13th Street
Grand Central Terminal
405 West 23rd street

Gimme! Coffe – in SoHo – you’ve got the brick but I’m pretty sure it’s SRO. 228 Mott Street.

Cafe Lalo – you’ve got the bricks but no couches… but you’ve got delicious desserts to make up for them! Plus they’ve got a wine list, and still manage to have that comfy feeling. 201 W 83rd Street.

Have you heard of The Chewing Gum Man? by Stanley DeGeorgio

You might have heard of the The Chewing Gum Man. He’s an artist called Ben Wilson who paints tiny pictures on the black blobs of chewing gum that cover all of our pavements. Muswell Hill in North London has loads of them because that’s where he lives, apparently. I’ve just heard that he’s got an exhibition coming up in September in Duke Street, St James’s and it looks really interesting. It’s of a group of black and white paintings that he did while sitting in a coffee shop in 2004 before he started working on the streets. They’re over a metre long, incredibly detailed and really well priced for an original artwork.

All the works in September’s exhibition were painted over an intensely productive 12 month period in a Muswell Hill coffee shop where many locals recall Ben concentrating intently on these minutely detailed works. The paintings show a strong narrative emphasized by their lack of colour and reflect Ben’s concerns over our social landscape and of the alienation that can be felt in our own environment.

Often, a semblance of a cityscape is evident with pathways directing the viewer sideways through the scroll-like picture encountering along the way depictions of man and nature and issues of freedom and confinement. This subject matter was influenced by Ben’s experiences during a trip to Finland where he had lived and sculpted in the country’s beautiful natural landscape and witnessed its co-existence with the more brutal, commercial industry of fox breeding.

Together, Ben’s Nordic exposure, sculptural background and concerns about our surroundings have culminated in this dramatic and thought provoking ‘black and white’ series.

What’s interesting is that Ben has never sought commercial success so this exhibition gives a rare opportunity for a wider audience to view his work. Visitors looking closely may even be able to spot a new jewel-like gum painting near the gallery on Duke Street which coincidentally is thought to be the first London street to have a pavement.

There’s only 31 works and they have never been seen before so I doubt they’ll be around long. Take a look on ForOneWeekOnly.com. The show is, as the website says, for one week only, so be careful you don’t miss it!

Foroneweekonly is proud to present its inaugural show with an exciting exhibition of paintings by artist Ben Wilson – for one week only! 31 works from Ben’s â€Black and White’ series are available for sale from 14th to 20th September at 37 Duke Street, St James’s.
