Masses of cloud left only two or three miles of Loch Ness visible, and the dark misty looking mountain side, sloping sharply down into the sullen lake, helped to make a picture which would have been anything but inviting to the maddest enthusiast who ever took to the water for amusement. However, the thing, black as it looked, had to be tried, so still keeping the weather shore, past an old mill, beside which the waters of Ness rush over a long dam, I plodded on under the smooth hewn rocks to Loch End, and feeling very much inclined for food, ran over to a beautifully quiet bay on the southern shore, where the deep water was so still, that reflections of rock and tree were unbroken. This charming retreat offered a tempting opportunity for tent trying, so beaching the canoe and taking therefrom bamboo poles, ropes and covering, I soon had the pretty white sides of my portable home glistening under the birches. The thing answered admirably, affording a capital shelter from a heavy rain shower which opportunely fell shortly after the tent was pitched. My first attempt at cooking proved a partial failure; but eventually a tolerable dinner of soup, bread, meat, and coffee was provided, after which, deeming the distance accomplished insufficient for a day’s work, I packed up my traps, launched the canoe, and proceeded westward.
