Africa – The Land Of Adventures

It is probably fair to say that people don’t really compare Africa to places like New Zealand and Australia when it comes to extreme sports. New Zealand is about the only place on earth that has every extreme sport going. New Zealand’s neighbour Australia is most certainly not too far behind in the extreme sports world but what has Africa got to offer in all of this? Can you really compare Africa and New Zealand when it comes down to it? Believe it or not there are few up and coming destinations in Africa that could rival or in even overtake New Zealand as the number 1 for extreme sports. There are various destinations across Africa where you can do adventurous activities such as a Mount Kilimanjaro climb in Tanzania or a bungee jump in South Africa or white water rafting in Zambia. Whatever New Zealand has so does Africa!

Africa does not only have adventure holidays in the form of extreme sports but it also has it in the form of safari holidays. This is big business across the African continent from Cape Town to Nairobi. Great destinations include Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa and Namibia. It is essential that when you pick your holiday abroad that you do some serious research before you step on the plane to depart.

African holidays are becoming more and more popular with tourists from all over the world and there are many Zanzibar hotels and Kenya holidays available but it’s up to you to pick the right one. The descriptions on websites and reviews by customers certainly influence your decision but at the end of the day you still have to choose. Your decision does not stop at which country you want to visit and which National Park you want to travel to but you have to consider accommodation options such as the Arusha Coffee Lodge or the Plantation Lodge for example. If you pick the correct accommodation this will compliment your holiday and make it everything you ever dreamed it would be.

Systems of Equations?

The following are word problems that are supposed to be solved by using systems of equations. (2 or more equations with two or more variables.

1) The sum of two numbers is twice their difference. The larger number is 6 more than twice the smaller. Find the numbers.

So far I have:
2x + 2y = x – y
x = 2y + 6
I got x = 18/5, y = -6/5, but do not know if this is correct. The ones below I do not understand how to set up.

2) A man has 14 coins in his pocket, all of which are dimes and quarters. If the total value of his change is $2.75, how many dimes and how many quarters does he have?

3) A man wants to purchase 3 pounds of coffee which is a blend of two coffees from Kenya and Sri Lanka costing $3.50 and $5.60 a pound respectively. If he spends $11.55, how much of each brand did he buy?

(1) x + y = 2(x – y)
x = 6 + 2y

6 + 2y + y = 2(6 + 2y) – 2y
6 + 3y = 12 + 2y
y = 6

x = 6 + 2(6)
x = 18

(2) x + y = 14
x(0.1) + y(0.25) = 2.75

Multiply top by -0.1:
-0.1x – 0.1y = -1.4

Add the equations together:
y(0.25 – 0.1) = 2.75 – 1.4
y = 9 ==> 9 quarters

x + 9 = 14
x = 5 ==> 5 nickels

(3) x + y = 3
3.5x + 5.6y = 11.55

See #2 for full procedure:
y(5.6 – 3.5) = 11.55 – 10.5
y = 0.5 ==> 0.5 pounds from Sri Lanka

x + 0.5 = 3
x = 2.5 ==> 2.5 pounds from Kenya

History of Kenya

Kenya is in the South Eastern part of Africa, flanked on the South by Tanzania, to the West by Uganda and to the North by the Sudan and Ethiopia. Kenya’s Eastern side to the North forms a border with Somalia and to the South consists of the beautiful Kenyan beaches that are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Over the centuries, we can trace the history of Kenya as far back as 2,000 BC. African tribes migrated from the North, West and South to populate the fertile grounds of the Kenyan Highlands creating a melting pot of languages and cultures in Kenya. Over the last 1500 years, the migrations have largely been by nomadic pastoralists who settled near water and rich feeding grounds for short periods of time until it was time to move on and look for greener grass. Bantu, Nilote and Hima peoples all came here. Today’s descendants are largely from the Bantu tribes, the Kamba, and the Kikuyu settled in the highlands to the North, while the Taita and other clans occupied the coastal areas to the South. Later, in the 17th century, Maasai clans migrated to the central plains.

The history of Kenya has not only been influenced by African tribe migrations. Due to its coastal location, Kenya has been subject to foreign invasions from Persians and Arabs throughout its history, leaving behind a strong Arabic influence. In fact the Swahili language, which is spoken in Kenya today, derives both from Bantu and Arabic. When Vasco da Gama discovered Kenya along the sea route to India in 1498, the Portuguese flocked to the area, hoping to dominate trade with India by the same token. Subsequent wranglings over trade in the Indian Ocean subjected Kenya to struggles with British, Dutch and Omani powers until it finally fell under the British Empire.

But it was the plantation system, established during the colonial period, that really helped Kenya develop economically and establish its independence. Brought to Kenya hundreds of years earlier from Ethiopia, Coffee crops became really important to Kenya’s economy in the 1900s. Over the last one hundred years, coffee and tea have become two of Kenya’s major exports. Today the plantations provide job security for Kenyans. Kenya is the world’s third largest tea producer. There is a good chance that your cup of tea has its origins in the fertile highlands of Kenya.
