Abe and his friend Sol are out for a walk together in a part of town they haven’t been in before. Passing a Christian church, they notice a curious sign in front that says “$1,000 to anyone who will convert.” “I wonder what that’s about,” says Abe. “I think I’ll go in and have a look. I’ll be back in a minute; just wait for me.” Sol sits on the sidewalk bench and waits patiently for nearly half an hour. Finally, Abe reappears. “Well,” asks Sol, “what are they up to? Who are they trying to convert? Why do they care? Did you get the $1,000?” Indignantly Abe replies, “Money. That’s all you people care about.” Ted Cohen thinks that’s not a bad joke. But he also doesn’t think it’s an easy joke. For a listener or reader to laugh at Abe’s conversion, a complicated set of conditions must be met. First, a listener has to recognize that Abe and Sol are Jewish names. Second, that listener has to be familiar with the widespread idea that Jews are more interested in money than anything else. And finally, the listener needs to know this information in advance of the joke, and without anyone telling him or her. Jokes, in short, are complicated transactions in which communities are forged, intimacy is offered, and otherwise offensive stereotypes and cliches lose their sting—at least sometimes. Jokes is a book of jokes and a book about them. Cohen loves a good laugh, but as a philosopher, he is also interested in how jokes work, why they work, and when they don’t. The delight at the end of a joke is the result of a complex set of conditions and processes, and Cohen takes us through these conditions in a philosophical exploration of humor. He considers questions of audience, selection of joke topics, the ethnic character of jokes, and their morality, all with plenty of examples that will make you either chuckle or wince. Jokes: more humorous than other philosophy books, more philosophical than other humor books. “Befitting its subject, this study of jokes is . . . light, funny, and thought-provoking. . . . [T]he method fits the material, allowing the author to pepper the book with a diversity of jokes without flattening their humor as a steamroller theory might. Such a book is only as good as its jokes, and most of his are good. . . . [E]ntertainment and ideas in one gossamer package.”— Kirkus Reviews “One of the many triumphs of Ted Cohen’s Jokes-apart from the not incidental fact that the jokes are so good that he doesn’t bother to compete with them-is that it never tries to sound more profound than the jokes it tells. . . . [H]e makes you feel he is doing an unusual kind of philosophy. As though he has managed to turn J. L. Austin into one of the Marx Brothers. . . . Reading Jokes makes you feel that being genial is the most profound thing we ever do-which is something jokes also make us feel-and that doing philosophy is as natural as being amused.”—Adam Phillips, London Review of Books “[A] lucid and jar

 A Stiff Critique

A Stiff Critique

$9.03

Kate Jasper, Marin County, California’s own, organically grown, amateur sleuth returns in this sixth mystery in the series. (“Kate Jasper is a delightful sleuth.”–Margaret Lucke, author of A RELATIVE STRANGER.) Kate is considering writing something besides jokes on the sides of coffee mugs for her gag gift company, Jest Gifts. To her own embarrassment, the stuff she’s writing is poetry. In A STIFF CRITIQUE, she joins a writers’ critique group with her friend Carrie, hoping for sensitive support. But the group criticisms are more cruel than supportive, especially the verbal abuse from successful thriller novelist Slade Skinner (born Sherman Francis Skinner), uttered with condescension as he pumps a dumbbell up and down. When Slade is found face down on his keyboard with the bloody dumbbell beside him, no one seems surprised by the poetic justice. After all, writing is murder. But Kate wants the real story on the killing, before someone in the group plots the next chapter.

Chapters: Culture of Lebanon, Lebanese Arabic, Thursday of the Dead, Lebanese Independence Day, Lebanese Christian Nationalism: the Rise and Fall of an Ethnic Resistance, Abu Abed, Women in Lebanon, Lebanese Nationalism, Cinema of Lebanon, Tantour. Excerpt: Abu Abed is a fictional character that forms the centerpiece of many jokes in Lebanon , though he is known throughout the Arab world . The Washington Post describes him as an “Archie Bunker -like figure who is a fumbling caricature of all the failings of the Lebanese.” His full name is sometimes given as Abu Abed El Beyrouty and he is also called Abul Abed or Abu El-Abed . In illustrations, Abu Abed most notable features are a large mustache and the red fez he wears on his head. Abu Abed’s best friend is Abu Steif, with whom he spends much of the day in the Kahwat El Ejeez , an actual and well-known coffee shop in central Beirut . He is sometimes claimed to be a Sunni Beiruti. One example of the literally hundreds of jokes with Abu Abed is:During the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, the most widely told joke among Lebanese was again about Abu Abed. The jokes goes: Abu Abed is sitting in the cafe when he calls Ehud Olmert , Prime Minister of Israel , to tell him not to come north of the border or he and four of this friends will give Israel trouble. Olmert laughs and tells Abed that one Israeli battalion can easily overrun his neighborhood. This verbal contest escalates until Abed says that he has collected thousands of fighters armed with shoulder-fired rockets and Olmert states that Israel has two million soldiers. “‘Two million?’ asks Abul Abed. ‘In that case I am going to have to surrender. We simply do not have enough room to keep 2 million hostages.’” Notes and references (URLs online) Websites (URLs online) A

Seeds of Insurrection: Domination and Resistance on Western Cuban Plantations, 1808-1848

Seeds of Insurrection: Domination and Resistance on Western Cuban Plantations, 1808-1848

$29.75

On a late September day in 1837, shortly after sunset, a group of six slaves marched into the small Cuban village of Güira de Melena, beating African drums and singing loudly. Alarmed, villagers rushed into the streets with machetes, sabers, and spears, ready to take action against the disobedient slaves. This makeshift parade, however, never evolved into the violent rebellion the villagers expected. Though the slaves who lived on Cuban coffee and sugar plantations sometimes defied their captors by orchestrating fierce uprisings and committing murder and suicide, they also resisted in less overt ways-by running away, feigning sickness, breaking tools, and by maintaining their own cultures. In Seeds of Insurrection, Manuel Barcia examines many largely overlooked ways in which African and Creole slaves in Cuba defied domination in the first half of the nineteenth century. Ethnic and geographic origins, as well as slaves’ personal experiences, affected their resistance to bondage. Dividing resistance into two broad types-violent and nonviolent-Barcia examines when and why the slaves chose certain forms. Creole slaves grew up in Cuba, for example, so they learned both the language of their ancestors and Spanish, and they came to understand their Spanish masters as few African-born slaves ever could. Consequently, they cleverly used the few rights colonial laws offered them to their advantage. African-born slaves, by contrast, carried with them their memories from home, their religious beliefs, jokes, and songs, and they dealt with enslavement by incorporating this cultural heritage into their everyday activities. Barcia demonstrates the ways in which the slaves made use ofthe privacy of their huts and barracks and the lack of surveillance in the fields to voice their ideas and opinions-through song, religion, gossip, folktales, and jokes-within an acceptable degree of safety. Relying primarily on transcripts of local and central court proceedings
