Cookie Swap! $14.95 Cookie swaps are joyful. Cookie swaps are social. Cookie swaps are hip yet old-school, trendy yet traditional. Cookie swaps are creative, inexpensive, DIY, and a great way to entertain. Cookie swaps are baking meets Stitch ’n Bitch, with newspapers, magazines, and websites—including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Better Homes and Gardens, Real Simple, Family Fun, Southern Living, Kraft.com, and Ed Levine’s Serious Eats—all writing about the trend. Cookie Swap! captures all of this and more in an idea-packed, slightly sassy guide. On the one hand, it’s all about the swap: when to swap (Christmas, of course, and other holidays, but also birthdays, bridal showers, graduation parties, PTA meetings, and fund-raisers—or just at your next book club meeting). And how to swap—with a planner, cookie swap math guide (so everyone gets the same number of cookies), ideas for invitations, decorations, containers, and then, when the crumbs have settled, how to make a keepsake. On the other hand, it’s all about the cookies. Lauren Chattman is a former professional pastry chef and baking writer who’s put together a knockout collection of more than 60 delectable, easy-to-make, simple-to-sophisticated recipes covering every kind of cookie—from crowd-pleasing favorites like Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies and Pumpkin Cheesecake Brownies to unexpected treats like Flaky Cardamom Palmiers and Green Tea Sandwich Cookies with Almond Cream. Finally, the book ends with a chapter of drink recipes—such as Iced Irish Coffee, Mini Strawberry Milk Shakes and Juicy Sangria—because not every cookie wants milk. |

Love Affair with Southern Cooking: Recipes and Recollections $34.99 More than a cookbook, this is the story of how a little girl, born in the South of Yankee parents, fell in love with southern cooking at the age of five. And a bite of brown sugar pie was all it took. “I shamelessly wangled supper invitations from my playmates,” Anderson admits. “But I was on a voyage of discovery, and back then iron-skillet corn bread seemed more exotic than my mom’s Boston brown bread and yellow squash pudding more appealing than mashed parsnips.” After college up north, Anderson worked in rural North Carolina as an assistant home demonstration agent, scarfing good country cooking seven days a week: crispy “battered” chicken, salt-rising bread, wild persimmon pudding, Jerusalem artichoke pickles, Japanese fruitcake. Later, as a New York City magazine editor, then a freelancer, Anderson covered the South, interviewing cooks and chefs, sampling local specialties, and scribbling notebooks full of recipes. Now, at long last, Anderson shares her lifelong exploration of the South’s culinary heritage and not only introduces the characters she met en route but also those men and women who helped shape America’s most distinctive regional cuisine—people like Thomas Jefferson, Mary Randolph, George Washington Carver, Eugenia Duke, and Colonel Harlan Sanders. Anderson gives us the backstories on such beloved Southern brands as Pepsi-Cola, Jack Daniel’s, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, MoonPies, Maxwell House coffee, White Lily flour, and Tabasco sauce. She builds a time line of important southern food firsts—from Ponce de León’s reconnaissance in the “Island of Florida” (1513) to the reactivation of George Washington’s still at Mount Vernon (2007). For those who don’t know a Chincoteague from a chinquapin, she adds a glossary of southern food terms and in a handy address book lists the best sources for stone-ground grits, country ham, sweet sorghum, boiled peanuts, and other hard-to-find southern foods. Recipes? There are two |

The coffee machine of choice for the solo coffee-drinking gourmet by Chris Lee Ramsden
Not everyone who loves gourmet coffee automatically forks out for a huge 12-cup coffee machine. You might lack the space for a large machine. Maybe your partner isn’t a coffee drinker. Perhaps your job means that you spend a lot of time on the move. Or you’re a student in temporary digs. But that doesn’t mean you have to make do with instant coffee, or pay lots of money to hang out at Starbucks.
The coffee machine market has recently seen a flood of single-cup coffee machines. Most of them employ a system in which a small bag of freshly ground coffee, about the diameter of a coffee cup, is placed in the machine and sealed. Boiling water is then forced through the bag under pressure on its way to the waiting cup. The whole process takes no more than three minutes and produces a perfect cup of fresh, frothy coffee every time.
The technology behind the single-cup coffee machine is very simple, so there’s not much that can go wrong, and the products themselves are mature enough to be supported by a broad range of Coffee Types to suit all tastes. The discerning coffee gourmet can find coffee bags from all the major coffee producing areas from bitter Java to smooth Kenyan coffee.
Perhaps the only down side is the coffee bag that has to be thrown away afterwards. The argument here is the same as for teabags – which show no signs of losing their popularity in the near future. Making one cup for one person means there’s no waste. You don’t need to use non-sustainable resources to heat water to boiling point unnecessarily. There’s no leftover coffee to throw away when you’re done. And finally, there’s no complicated cleaning – you don’t even have to wash up a coffee jug as you would with a conventional drip or Filter Coffee machine – the coffee goes straight into the cup.
The coffee bags themselves make great compost ingredients. The bag biodegrades very fast, and coffee is full of nutrients that micro-organisms thrive on. Of course, you’ll need a garden to reap the full benefit.
So if you’re the soul coffee-drinker in your household or at work, you don’t have to settle for second best. A single-cup coffee machine will guarantee you a great cup of coffee and save coffee, water, energy and your time. And with those kinds of savings you’ll be able to treat yourself to the occasional coffee in your favourite coffee shop and maybe invite a friend too.
