 Designing Commercial Interiors

Designing Commercial Interiors

The definitive reference on designing commercial interiors—expanded and updated for today’s facilities Following the success of the ASID/Polsky Prize Honorable Mention in 1999, authors Christine Piotrowski and Elizabeth Rogers have extensively revised this guide to planning and designing commercial interiors to help professionals and design students successfully address today’s trends and project requirements. This comprehensive reference covers the practical and aesthetic issues that distinguish commercial interiors. There is new information on sustainable design, security, and accessibility—three areas of increased emphasis in modern interiors. An introductory chapter provides an overview of commercial interior design and the challenges and rewards of working in the field, and stresses the importance of understanding the basic purpose and functions of the client’s business as a prerequisite to designing interiors. This guide also gives the reader a head start with eight self-contained chapters that provide comprehensive coverage of interior design for specific types of commercial facilities, ranging from offices to food and beverage facilities, and from retail stores to health care facilities. Each chapter is complete with a historical overview, types of facilities, planning and interior design elements, design applications, a summary, references, and Web sites. New design applications covered include spas in hotels, bed and breakfast inns, coffee shops, gift stores and salons, courthouses and courtrooms, and golf clubhouses. In keeping with the times, there are new chapters focusing on senior living facilities and on restoration and adaptive use. Inns And Taverns Of Old London

Inns And Taverns Of Old London

$27.95

For all races of Teutonic origin the claim is made that they are essentially home-loving people. Yet the Englishman of the sixteenth and seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially of the latter, is seen to have exercised considerable zeal in creating substitutes for that home which, as a Teuton, he ought to have loved above all else. This, at any rate, was emphatically the case with the Londoner, as the following pages will testify. When he had perfected his taverns and inns, perfected them, that is, according to the light of the olden time, he set to work evolving a new species of public resort in the coffee-house.That type of establishment appears to have been responsible for the development of the club, another substitute for the home. And then came the age of the pleasure-garden. Both the latter survive, the one in a form of a more rigid exclusiveness than the eighteenth century Londoner would have deemed possible; the other in so changed a guise that frequenters of the prototype would scarcely recognize the relationship. But the coffee-house and the inn and tavern of old London exist but as a picturesque memory which these pages attempt to revive. -Preface, H.C.S.

Excerpt: Charles Henry Bewley (July 12, 1888, Dublin 1969, Rome) was raised in a famous Dublin Quaker business family, embraced Irish Republicanism. He was the Irish envoy to Berlin who reportedly thwarted efforts to obtain visas for Jews wanting to leave Nazi Germany in the 1930s and to move to the safety of the Irish Free State. He was born into a wealthy privileged family, the eldest of four brothers. His mother was Evelyn Pim. Her family owned a large department store in Georges Street, Dublin. His father was a medical doctor. The family operated the successful “Bewley’s cafés” chain of coffee houses in Dublin that is still famous today. His mother was Anglican and his father was a Quaker; Charles and his brothers were raised as Quakers. He was educated at Park House, a boarding school in England. This honour was withdrawn when he declared in a debate that England is not a musical nation and he ridiculed the anthem God save the King. He went up to New College, Oxford, where he read Law. In 1910 he won the Newdigate prize for poetry. He completed his training as a barrister at King’s Inns, Dublin and in 1914 he was called to the bar. Charles’ brother Kenneth also attended Oxford University. Kenneth was a career civil servant in H.M. Treasury. His younger brothers, Geoffrey and Maurice, studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin. Charles Bewley was seen as an enfant terrible. He rejected his Anglo-Irish heritage and embraced Celtic mythology of the kind popularised by WB Yeats. He spoke against the evils of Anglicization’, supported the Boers and converted to Catholicism. He rejected Unionist politics and supported the Home Rule movement. At the outbreak of the … More:

 National Geographic Traveler Italy

National Geographic Traveler Italy

$4.87

Veteran writer and Italy expert, Tim Jepson makes this vibrant and fascinating country-home of some of the world’s most sublime art, architecture, and literature and one of its oldest civilizations-highly accessible to the modern traveler. After a thorough introduction, he begins his coverage in Rome with specific, detailed suggestions on how to tackle this most sight-intensive city: Your best approach is an oblique one, he writes. Avoid the big-name sights at the outset, and ease yourself gently into the city with a coffee or a stroll around its most intimate squares. He continues with this kind of advice as he travels around the country- north to Lombardy, the Lakes, the Veneto, Tuscany, and Umbria, and then south to Naples, ending up in Sicily-combining intimate guidance with strong and substantive information. Special features include numerous city walks, drives around Lake Maggiore, through Chianti country, and into the heart of Umbria, and discussions of many aspects of Italian culture and contemporary life. An extensive Travelwise section offers a wide selection of author’s picks of hotels, inns, and restaurants, as well as details on shopping and all the practical information you need to get around.
