Tantrus – Live At Coffee House (Hudson, Wisconsin) Part 1

Do Airline Pilots Earn Their Salary

How much is an Airline Pilot Salary and is it enough for those pilots have the responsibility of flying us safely to our destinations every day? If you think about not only the responsibility for transporting ourselves and our loved ones domestically and around the world. Also consider the constant training, study and preparation that is a requirement for pilots to stay current and on top of their game.

With low cost carriers becoming more standard in todays airline industry along with the extremely high price of fuel, it is easy to see why the average Pilot Salary and conditions have been reduced as airlines continue to cut costs. To remain competitive and profitable airlines have to lower costs in order to survive but when do you reach the point when safety is compromised.

As a paying customers we all want the cheaper fares and don’t want to pay high prices for our tickets. Now lets consider the example Captain Sully used in an interview after his famous ditching in the Hudson River. He talked about an average regional airline first officer who earned roughly sixteen and a half thousand dollars a year who was required to work a second job in a coffee shop in order to pay the bills. If you look at the time, money, study and persistance that is a requirement to achieve an airline pilot transport license, how can we expect bright young graduates to accept a career as a pilot. Why would somebody do this when they can earn the same money working at Mcdonalds?

Considering there is pilots at two or more jobs and some airlines requiring pilots to carry their own food to work would you be okay to fly as a passenger on their flights? In all seriousness would be happy to be flown by a weary and hungry pilot. I definitely wouldn’t and I hope that these practises are stopped before an accident eventuates because of it. It is essential that the basic Airline Pilot Salary stay at at a competitive level to ensure we keep our experienced pilots.
