In this, the two stars danced around a huge chandelier that was standing up from the floor, simulating the ceiling. Matthews subsequently adopted “Dancing on the Ceiling” as her signature tune. The show was Matthews’ biggest stage success and led to her renowned film career. The musical garnered critical and box office success, running for 254 performances. 50 Harbor Street (Cedar Cove Series #5) $6.75 Corrie McAfee50 Harbor StreetCedar Cove, WashingtonDear Reader,Considering that I’m married to Cedar Cove’s private investigator, you might think I enjoy mysteries. But I don’t—especially when they involve us! Roy’s been receiving anonymous postcards and messages asking if we "regret the past." We don’t know what they mean….On a more positive note, we’re both delighted that our daughter, Linnette, has moved to Cedar Cove to work at the new medical clinic. A while ago I attended the humane society’s "Dog and Bachelor Auction," where I bought her a date with Cal Washburn, who works at Cliff Harding’s horse farm. Unfortunately Linnette is less enthusiastic about this date than I am.Speaking of Cliff, the romance between him and Grace Sherman is back on. But that’s only one of the many interesting stories here in Cedar Cove. So why don’t you drop by for a coffee at my husband’s office on Main Street or our house on Harbor and I’ll tell you everything that’s new!Corrie |

A&P: The Story of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (Images of America Series) $21.99 In 1859, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, known everywhere as A&P, began as a mail-order business located at 31 Vesey Street in downtown Manhattan. In 1925, A&P operated more than thirteen thousand grocery stores nationwide, with more than forty thousand employees. By 1950, approximately ten cents out of every dollar spent on food in the United States passed over A&P counters. A&P: The Story of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company tells the story of how cofounder George Huntington Hartford and his sons John and George brought A&P to a popularity with consumers that few companies have ever achieved. This stunning collection of vintage photographs shows such nostalgic scenes as the elegant early stores, their gleaming window displays, and the red horse-drawn delivery wagons with the A&P logo emblazoned on their sides. Shoppers choose from rows of colorful merchandise and fresh produce; uniformed storekeepers make change from ornate registers; and the founder’s son tastes A&P’s Eight O’Clock coffee. A&P is still an industry leader, and A&P: The Story of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company shows why, from the Hartford family’s legacy to the generations of shoppers who depend on A&P for fair prices and quality food. This is the history of the supermarket where America grew up shopping. |

Black Boulder Claim, $20.56 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III THE HIGH SIERRAS I CLIMBED out of bed long before sunrise next morning, dressed quietly, not to waken Mother Laing, started a fire in the kitchen stove and placed coffee to boil before I went to the pasture and whistled for Zim. He came to the bars dashingly, as though to prove to me that the years had taken none of his speed and agility. I slipped the halter over his nose with: ” Take it easy, horse. There’s a hard pull ahead foryou,” and he muzzled my shoulder, his cold nose against my ear, as he followed me to the stable. While he ate his breakfast, I saddled him carefully, his own blanket, then mine, folded beneath the leather; the cinch tight but not binding; and I began packing with an even distribution of the load. Two burlap sacks with the bulk of the weight were so roped together that they hung high one on either stirrup-flap and gave a foundation for lighter but bulkier stuff which must make up the load. In the burlaps were my provisions, oats for Zim, extra clothing, towels and soap. Matches were in corked brass cartridge shells, absolutely waterproof, in a canvas bag with a coffee-pot, a small boiling- pot, two tin plates, a tin cup, knife, fork and spoon. This was tied across the saddle seat, with another sack behind it, hitched to the cantle, in which rattled a frying-pan and my miner’s pan, a horn spoon, a deep iron spoon big enough to melt metal over fire, and a prospector’s hammer. When these four sacks had been firmly fastened with Zim’s picket-rope to Zim’sback, I poked in between their coils and his sides, a poll-pick, a long handled shovel, and an axe, hung over the pummel my repeating rifle in its leathern boot and a large canteen filled with water, strung a belt of cartridges over the cantle to lash at its rings, then stood back |

Excerpt: The Kebra Nagast (var. Kebra Negast, Ge’ez , , ), or the Book of the Glory of Kings, is an account written in Ge’ez of the origins of the Solomonic line of the Emperors of Ethiopia. The text, in its existing form, is at least seven hundred years old, and is considered by many Ethiopian Christians and Rastafarians to be an inspired and a reliable account. Not only does it contain an account of how the Queen of Sheba met Solomon, and about how the Ark of the Covenant came to Ethiopia with Menelik I, but contains an account of the conversion of the Ethiopians from the worship of the sun, moon, and stars to that of the “Lord God of Israel”. As Edward Ullendorff explained in the 1967 Schweich Lectures, “The Kebra Nagast is not merely a literary work, but — as the Old Testament to the Hebrews or the Qur’an to the Arabs — it is the repository of Ethiopian national and religious feelings.” The Kebra Nagast is divided into 117 chapters, and even after a single reading one can see that it is clearly a composite work; Ullendorff describes its narrative “a gigantic conflation of legendary cycles.” The document is presented in the form of a debate by the 318 “orthodox fathers” of the First Council of Nicaea. These fathers pose the question, “Of what doth th… More: |
