 Absent a Miracle

Absent a Miracle

$26

Alice Fairweather, a lapsed Catholic who lives in upstate New York with her two sons and philandering husband (whom she loves to distraction), has just lost her dream job as a radio talk show hostess. When one of the family dogs suddenly becomes gravely ill, Alice opts out of a family spelunking vacation to nurse the pooch. Unexpectedly, her husband’s charismatic Nicaraguan Harvard roommate, Abelardo—coffee planter, failed seminarian, and scion of an old Nicaraguan family—comes to visit as part of his quest to have his aunt canonized as the first Nicaraguan saint. Through a variety of somewhat bizarre and miraculous events, Abelardo must return home to his village before his canonization work is complete. But Alice, with time on her hands and a void to fill, adopts Abelardo’s mission and becomes obsessed with helping him find the path to sanctify his ancestor. Not only does she befriend Hubert, the eccentric man in charge of New York’s hagiography club, she becomes somewhat of an expert on the various women who have achieved the distinction of sainthood, and soon finds herself on a plane destined for Nicaragua.Abelardo’s quest to canonize his aunt, together with Alice’s quest to save her marriage, makes for a miraculous story of love, loss, and faith.

Baby, Let Me Follow You Down

Baby, Let Me Follow You Down

$29.95

Long out of print, Baby, Let Me Follow You Down is a classic in the history of American popular culture. The book tells the story of the folk music community in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from its beginnings in living rooms and Harvard Square coffee houses in the late 1950s to the heyday of the folk music revival in the early 1960s. Hundreds of photographs and dozens of interviews combine to re-create the years when Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and a lively band of Cambridge folksingers led a generation in the rediscovery of American folk music.

“Engineers create many of the inventions that shape our society, and as such they play a vital role in determining how we live. This new book does an outstanding job of filling in the knowledge and perspective that engineers must have to be good citizens in areas ranging from the environment, to intellectual property, to ensuring the health of the innovation ecosystem that has done so much for modern society. This is exactly the sort of book that engineers and those who work with them should read and discuss over pizza, coffee, or some other suitable, discussion-provoking consumable.”—John L. Hennessy, president, Stanford University“Citizen Engineer is the bible for the new era of socially responsible engineering. It’s an era where, as the authors show, engineers don’t just need to know more, they need to be more. The work is an inspiration, an exhortation, and a practical how-to guide. All engineers concerned with the impact of their work—and that should be all engineers—must read this book.”—Hal Abelson, professor of computer science and engineering, MIT“Code is law. Finally, a map to responsible law making. This accessible and brilliant book should be required of every citizen, and especially, the new citizen lawmakers we call engineers.” —Lawrence Lessig, director, Safra Center for Ethics, Harvard University, and cofounder, Creative CommonsBeing an engineer today means being far more than an engineer. You need to consider not only the design requirements of your projects but the full impact of your work—from an ecological perspective, an intellectual property perspective, a business perspective, and a sociological perspective. Leaving the Saints

Leaving the Saints

$14.95

Leaving the Saints is an unforgettable memoir about one woman’s spiritual quest and journey toward faith. As Mormon royalty within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Martha Beck was raised in a home frequented by the Church’s high elders–known as the apostles–and her existence was framed by their strict code of conduct. Wearing her sacred garments, she married in a secret temple ceremony–but only after two Mormon leaders ascertained that her past contained no flirtation with serious sins, such as committing murder or drinking coffee. She went to church faithfully with the other brothers and sisters of her ward. When her son was born with Down syndrome, she and her husband left their graduate programs at Harvard to return to Provo, Utah, where they knew the supportive Mormon community would embrace them. However, soon after Martha began teaching at Brigham Young University, she began to see firsthand the Church’s ruthlessness as it silenced dissidents and masked truths that contradicted its published beliefs. Most troubling of all, she was forced to face her history of sexual abuse by one of the Church’s most prominent authorities. This book chronicles her difficult decision to sever her relationship with the faith that had cradled her for so long and to confront and forgive the person who betrayed her so deeply. This beautifully written, inspiring memoir explores the powerful yearning toward faith. It offers a rare glimpse inside one of the world’s most secretive religions while telling a profoundly moving story of personal courage, survival, and the transformative power of spirituality. From the Hardcover edition.

From The Publisher:It all begins on Christmas morning, 1978. Dan Kennedy is ten years old and wants a black Gibson Les Paul guitar, the kind Peter Frampton plays. It will be his passport to the coolest (only) band in the neighborhood–Jokerz. He doesn’t get it. Instead, his parents present him with what they think he wants most, a real-estate loan calculator (called the Loan Arranger) and a maroon velour pullover shirt with a tan stripe across the chest. It is the first of what will become a lifetime of various-sized failures, misunderstandings, comical humiliations, and just plain silly choices that have dogged this hipster Proust of youthful loserdom, as author Jerry Stahl has so eloquently called Mr. Kennedy.Dan’s hilarious and painfully awkward youth soon develops into a… uh… hilarious and painfully awkward adulthood. His first two choices for university are Yale (Lit or Drama) and Harvard (Business), so he reviews his high school transcripts and decides on Butte Community College in Oroville, California, where he studies for about four and a half weeks. We could go on here and describe in detail all of Dan’s good-natured stabs at ambition, but he, himself, sums it all up quite nicely: If you’ve ever tried and failed miserably at being a rock star (no guitar/talent), a professional bass fisherman, an extra in the movie Sleepless in Seattle (guy drinking martini in bar while Tom Hanks makes a phone call), a Madison Avenue advertising executive, a clerk/towel person at a suburban health club (named Kangaroo Kourts), an espresso street-cart owner and operator (in the one neighborhood of that coffee-swilling town, Seattle, where, remarkably, no one really seems to drink coffee), a dot.com millionaire, an MTV VJ, or a forest fire fighter, this book is for you. Along the way, a few lessons are learned and we are treated to one of the most original, riotously funny, unsentimental, and offbeat memoirs in recent history. Dan’s a favorite in McSwee

It all begins on Christmas morning, 1978. Dan Kennedy is ten years old and wants a black Gibson Les Paul guitar, the kind Peter Frampton plays. It will be his passport to the coolest (only) band in the neighborhood—Jokerz. He doesn’t get it. Instead, his parents present him with what they think he wants most, a real-estate loan calculator (called the Loan Arranger) and a maroon velour pullover shirt with a tan stripe across the chest. It is the first of what will become a lifetime of various-sized failures, misunderstandings, comical humiliations, and just plain silly choices that have dogged this “hipster Proust of youthful loserdom,” as author Jerry Stahl has so eloquently called Mr. Kennedy.Dan’s hilarious and painfully awkward youth soon develops into a . . . uh . . . hilarious and painfully awkward adulthood. PHILANTHROPY —ITS SUCCESS AND FAILURE. By Jaku O. 8. Huntinoton, Order or The Holt Crosi, Westminster, Mi-. From the first founding of the New England colonies up to the beginning of the present century philanthropy in this country was in its merely rudimentary and inchoate condition. No trace is to be found in the annals of that period of many of our most familiar and successful charities. There were no Fresh Air Funds, no St. Andrew’s Coffee- stands, no Day Nurseries, no Newsboys’ Lodging Houses. The principal charitable institution was one in the neighborhood of Boston, for the instruction of Indian lads. It was called “Harvard College.” Family traditions and the anecdotes related by our grandfathers and grandmothers make us familiar with the social life of those early days. Comforts were few and work was hard; many of the very necessaries of to-day were unknown; but the problems of pauperism and mendicancy had not presented themselves. There were plenty of kindly act done for those under one or anotherform of temporary difficulty or need, but they could hardly be dignified with the name of philanthropy. They were nothing but the friendly deeds of neighbors, done as a matter of course, and regarded as entitling the doer to no special credit here or hereafter; in many cases they were mutual benefactions, and the recipient of the favor this year returned it the next. What poor people there were, — old folks who had come into the community late in life and had no one specially related to them, weak-minded and imbecile persons, chronic invalids, — were provided for at the “poor- house,” generally a farm on public land under the care of some good-natured man and his wife who ‘ looked upon their charges simply as unfortunate human beings, not as scientific

“An original and intriguing book, which I read with the greatest interest. Herbst’s argument is provocative and lucidly presented. This book will be read and debated not only by Africanists but also by others in the political science community. It is the most important and successful contribution to the literature on African politics since Jackson and Rosberg’s Personal Rule in Black Africa.”–Robert H. Bates, Harvard University, author of Open-Economy Politics: The Political Economy of the World Coffee Trade”Herbst’s arguments will excite controversy among students of African history and politics, who have built up an extensive story about European transformations of African politics. His analysis raises doubts about how deeply those transformations went; rather, he maintains that durable conditions of topography and social structure have long constrained African state formation. Herbst offers an integrated account of state formation, transformation, and deformation in sub-Saharan Africa.”–Charles Tilly, Columbia University, author of Durable Inquality

Coffee And Prostate Health

Millions of men know how valuable their prostate health is, in fact, awareness about prostate health has increased thanks to ‘BPH and your prostate‘ style education campaigns. The prostate is just a small sized gland located below the bladder but neglecting it could mean a lot of trouble for men later in life. Drinking or taking lots of fluids is one of the most effective medical advice by doctors to attain good prostate health. It is also advised to stay away from caffeinated drinks which is why coffee and  prostate health seem not to mix well. Coffee contains a lot of of caffeine that can irritate the urinary tract thereby adding more problem.

As soon as a man has an enlarged prostate, the best thing to do is take lots of fluids to flush out liquid out from the bladder. So when coffee and prostate health  are combined, they just work against each other. However, it was really proven that caffeine can cause dehydration. In the past few years, there have been research linking positive relationship between coffee and prostate health.

There has been latest updates on coffee and prostate health,Sciencedaily reported  in December 2009 that there was data revealing an indirect and inverse correlation between coffee consumption and the risk of lethal and advanced prostate cancers. In fact, conclusions from the research was presented to the American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference. Although doctors would still need more research before they start advising their patients to drink more coffee. The rationale behind this according to a certain Dr. Wilson at Harvard Medical School asserts that coffee can have an effect on glucose metabolism, insulin and sex hormone levels. The same biological factors play an important function in determining prostate health: positively or otherwise. Thus, coffee and prostate health is actually a healthy mix after all. Moreover, the clinical study also reported that men who have their daily shot of caffeine are better off with good prostate health than those who don’t. The probability of coffee lovers to have prostate cancer is decreased by as much as 60% which is very good news. Nevertheless, there are additional studies that has to be made to substantiate the claim but having a cup of coffee seems to be a good idea.

Another Bio-chemist falls off a UN building. Is this suspicious?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1224377/British-nuclear-expert-s-17th-floor-UN-death-plunge-suicide.html?ITO=1490&referrer=yahoo

Are you seriously saying the UN building has no CCTV in there at all ?

And don’t forget the about the 6 Microbiologists, from Harvard University Medical School, who were mysteriously poisoned, back in August. It seems they had all drunk coffee from a single-serve coffee machine, near the pathology lab. Thankfully, they lived to tell the tale.

Even with them alive – the total stands at 31 dead microbiologists in only 3 years. All well before their time.

This isn’t unusual for people in this line of work. I seem to remember a few (well, more than a few) of the Scientists involved in the MKULTRA Program having some well dodgy suicides. (Diving out windows, “hopped up on LSD”.
In UK, we had some bizzarre suicides in the 80′s involving Scientists who had all been working for a Bio -Physics facility set up as a front for some dodgy Government Research thing. The bizzarity of the suicides drew attention to some very interesting questions that were never answered. For National Security reasons. The most outrageous suicide being one Scientist, of previously excellent mental health, tying one end of a 200ft clothesline around his neck, the other end around a tree, then getting in his car, and driving off. I think the inquest ruled as suicide, due to depression, but those are not the actions of a “depressed person”.
I think one of the other Scientists, sat in front of a standing stone somewhere, and beat his own brains out.

A lot of this kind of work is directly for Governments, and the kind of stuff they are researching at the moment, is at the very least, of “questionable ethics” at worst, probably Frankensteinian, and we know how they like to keep things like this under wraps! I n the case of the six Microbiologists, what they must have been working on must have been pretty awful, if whoever wanted it covering up, went to such desperate and obvious tactics.

Priya Malhotra: Does Coffee Reduce Cancer Risk? (Huffington post)

According to a Harvard University study, “Women who consumed four or more cups
of coffee had 25 percent lower risk of endometrial cancer than those who
consumed less than one cup per day.” I admit, I was skeptical when I first saw
headlines about this study.
