The Economics of Fair Trade Coffee: For Whose Benefit? $100.37 This book is intended for all readers interested in a critical assessment of fair trade. How much does fair trade contribute to development? Does consumer awareness make any difference at all? Or are supermarkets selling fair trade coffee just cleanwashing their reputation in the fair trade business? These are some of the key questions examined in this book. I start by providing a short description of the coffee market and some of its major trends. I then turn to the origin and structure of the fair trade movement. The pricing scheme of Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) is compared to those of other private labeling initiatives. The last part examines benefits generated for participants on the supply and demand side. Revenues accruing to coffee producers in the South and fair trade organizations in the Western world are estimated. Finally, an original empirical strategy is proposed to see whether consumer awareness is making any difference and/or if supermarkets are cleanwashing their reputation in the fair trade business. Data from 13 European countries is used in two different econometric models (OLS and treatment regression model). Author: Kohler, Pierre Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 122 Publication Date: 2010/09/03 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.29 inches |

The treaty places King John firmly on the throne of Abyssinia and gives him a fair field to develop the resources of his country, and to drive back the wave of Mahdism; if he allows foreign merchants into his country, there is no doubt that it will get on, as he has many industries to improve and products to be worked, which only the foreigner can do, and teach the inhabitants of the country to follow his example. Coffee-planting might be made an industry, and grown nearer the coast than it now is. The collection of india-rubber would give employment to many hands. Improved agriculture would bring better crops. Windmillsmight be put up to grind the corn, and Massowah would obtain its supplies of flour from Asmara. There will always be a flow of dollars from Massowah to the hills, and there is a chance of the Hamasen again becoming an important place the moment confidence is restored. A&P: The Story of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (Images of America Series) $21.99 In 1859, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, known everywhere as A&P, began as a mail-order business located at 31 Vesey Street in downtown Manhattan. In 1925, A&P operated more than thirteen thousand grocery stores nationwide, with more than forty thousand employees. By 1950, approximately ten cents out of every dollar spent on food in the United States passed over A&P counters. A&P: The Story of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company tells the story of how cofounder George Huntington Hartford and his sons John and George brought A&P to a popularity with consumers that few companies have ever achieved. This stunning collection of vintage photographs shows such nostalgic scenes as the elegant early stores, their gleaming window displays, and the red horse-drawn delivery wagons with the A&P logo emblazoned on their sides. Shoppers choose from rows of colorful merchandise and fresh produce; uniformed storekeepers make change from ornate registers; and the founder’s son tastes A&P’s Eight O’Clock coffee. A&P is still an industry leader, and A&P: The Story of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company shows why, from the Hartford family’s legacy to the generations of shoppers who depend on A&P for fair prices and quality food. This is the history of the supermarket where America grew up shopping. |

American Juries: The Verdict $32.98 Although the right to trial by jury is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, in recent years both criminal and civil juries have been criticized as incompetent, biased, and irresponsible. For example, the O.J. Simpson criminal jury’s verdict produced a racial divide in opinions about that trial. And many Americans still hold strong views about the jury that awarded millions of dollars to a woman who spilled a cup of McDonald’s coffee on herself. It’s said that there are “judicial hellholes” where local juries provide “jackpot justice” in medical malpractice and product liability cases with corporate defendants. Are these claims valid? This monumental and comprehensive volume reviews over fifty years of empirical research on civil and criminal juries and returns a verdict that strongly supports the jury system. Rather than relying on anecdotes, Vidmar and Hans-renowned scholars of the jury system-place the jury system in its historical and contemporary context, giving the stories behind important trials while providing fact-based answers to critical questions. How do juries make decisions and how do their verdicts compare to those of trial judges and technical experts? What roles do jury consultants play in influencing trial outcomes? Can juries understand complex expert testimony? Under which circumstances do capital juries decide to sentence a defendant to die? Are juries biased against doctors and big business? Should juries be allowed to give punitive damages? How do juries respond to the insanity defense? Do jurors ignore the law? Finally, the authors consider various suggestions for improving the way that juries are asked to carry out their duties. After briefly comparing the American jury to its counterparts in other nations, they conclude that our jury system, despite occasional problems, is, on balance, fair and democratic, and should remain an indispensable component of the judicial process for the foreseeable future.Neil Vidmar, PhD, (Durham, |

Art Reproduction Oil Painting – Picasso Paintings: Guernica, 1937 with Verona Cafe – Coffee Brown Patina Finish – 28 X 40 – Hand Painted Framed Canvas Art $338 Hand painted oil reproduction of one of Picasso’s most famous paintings, Guernica. Originally created in 1937 it has been carefully recreated detail-by-detail, color-by-color to near perfection in order to preserve the sentiment and splendor of the original. Guernica depicts the bombing of Guernica, Spain, by twenty-eight German bombers, on April 26, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. The Spanish Republican government commissioned Picasso to create this large mural for the Spanish display at the Paris International Exposition in the 1937 World’s Fair. This painting shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. The painting has gained a monumental status as an anti-war symbol and embodiment of peace. Picasso was recognized by his father as a child prodigy by the age of 14. Pablo Picasso pioneered the modern art movement called Cubism and is widely acknowledged as the most important artist of the 20th century. This work of art has the same emotions and beauty as the original. Why not grace your home with this reproduced masterpiece? It is sure to bring many admirers! Brewing Justice $27.3 The idea of fair trade in a global economy is central to contemporary debates over neoliberalism, globalization and the rule of the free market. But what are the coordinates of the fair trade moment; what sort of alternative does it offer for producers and consumers? Daniel Jaffee is at once a fierce proponent of fair trade but also a critical voice. How, he asks, can fair trade coffee be in and against the market? With one foot in the Central American coffee fincas and the other in the intellectual world of Karl Polanyi and his disciples, Daniel Jaffee has on offer a very heady brew. Brewing Justice is a pioneering study of the variety of fair trade movements; a prospectus for a more radical vision of fair trade–an alternative sort of market; and a vital contribution to contemporary debates over free trade, the global agro-food system and the so-called ‘movement of movements’. A tour de force. –Michael Watts, University of California, Berkeley Daniel Jaffee has done the Fair Trade movement a real service in his meticulous research into the actual effect of Fair Trade on coffee farmers in a group of villages in Oaxaca, Mexico. Up till now the claims of Fair Trade benefits for the producers have been largely based on brief visits and anecdotes., but now there is hard evidence. In analysing the market for Fair Trade he distinguishes clearly between those who wish to break the market, those who would reform the market and those who simply want access to a growing market. But his book will be of great value not only in his conclusions about how Fair Trade can be made fairer, but in extending our understanding of the overwhelming power of the giant corporations in internationaltrade, even seeking to improve their image by cooptation and dilution of the standards when faced by the challenge of Fair Trade. –Michael Barratt Brown, author of Fair Trade: Reform and Realities in the International Trading System It is possible to establish a global economy th |

Exactly what is fair trade coffee? Quite simply, it is coffee which is certified by an independent organization as being produced by small farmers in developing countries. To earn this certification, these growers have to meet particular conditions of production, human rights and local community development. Once certified, this coffee comes at no less than the minimum selling price set through the certifying organization (Fair Trade Labeling Organization (FLO) determines these prices).
The problem for modest farmers is the fact that coffee price ranges can certainly fluctuate significantly. In the past, coffee prices have increased dramatically when coffee output was restricted and need was substantial, and have plummeted when coffee output surpassed demand from customers. Most of these small businesses are unable to decrease their costs or ride out some minor deficits when the price falls. The minimum prices fixed by FLO are not set based on marketplace conditions, but are established instead in accordance with the typical expense to growers for growing coffee. Recognizing that their expenses will be covered, producers have the safety net they have to have to carry on and harvest coffee year in year out.
But fair trade certification does not stop there. In addition to establishing a baseline price for coffee, it also establishes a price premium. The money earned by this premium isn’t going to go straight to the farmer for his coffee, but rather it goes right into a community fund, and is utilized in whatever way the coffee producers and /or the coffee laborers democratically choose to use it. This cash must be used to boost their economic, environmental and social conditions. With these funds, coffee growing communities can buy schooling, medical care and acceptable housing.
So what is fair trade coffee? It could be the opportunity for modest family held farms and farming neighborhoods to escape poverty. It is also the guarantee for individual workers that their working conditions are going to be safe and that they will be paid a fair wage for the work which they do.
It is also an opportunity for you to help build an industry that treats the “little guy” with fairness. This coffee might cost you a little extra, but now you know why. Buyer assistance is extremely important for the success of the fair trade strategy. With out purchaser support, it hardly makes a difference what price is set because growers will earn no income at all if the coffee is not purchased.
The idea of selling fair trade coffee was born in the late 1980s as a result of a survey that indicated that customers would shop for the more costly coffee. Two Dutchmen, searching for a big-brand partner to create a coffee brand name, were aggravated by the lack of interest from the coffee big boys. So they chose to launch their very own brand — banking on a survey that suggested that as much as 15% of the Dutch coffee drinking public would support small farmers by purchasing their coffee. The brand name was launched and was incredibly successful. From that point to this, fair trade coffee has had a small but increasing reputation within the worldwide coffee market.
