The Economics of Fair Trade Coffee: For Whose Benefit?

The Economics of Fair Trade Coffee: For Whose Benefit?

$100.37

This book is intended for all readers interested in a critical assessment of fair trade. How much does fair trade contribute to development? Does consumer awareness make any difference at all? Or are supermarkets selling fair trade coffee just cleanwashing their reputation in the fair trade business? These are some of the key questions examined in this book. I start by providing a short description of the coffee market and some of its major trends. I then turn to the origin and structure of the fair trade movement. The pricing scheme of Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) is compared to those of other private labeling initiatives. The last part examines benefits generated for participants on the supply and demand side. Revenues accruing to coffee producers in the South and fair trade organizations in the Western world are estimated. Finally, an original empirical strategy is proposed to see whether consumer awareness is making any difference and/or if supermarkets are cleanwashing their reputation in the fair trade business. Data from 13 European countries is used in two different econometric models (OLS and treatment regression model). Fair Trade and Social Justice

Fair Trade and Social Justice

$75

By 2008, total Fair Trade purchases in the developed world reached nearly $3 billion, a five-fold increase in four years. Consumers pay a “fair price” for Fair Trade items, which are meant to generate greater earnings for family farmers, cover the costs of production, and support socially just and environmentally sound practices. Yet constrained by existing markets and the entities that dominate them, Fair Trade often delivers material improvements for producers that are much more modest than the profound social transformations the movement claims to support. There has been scant real-world assessment of Fair Trade’s effectiveness. Drawing upon fine-grained anthropological studies of a variety of regions and commodity systems including Darjeeling tea, coffee, crafts, and cut flowers, the chapters in Fair Trade and Social Justice represent the first works to use ethnographic case studies to assess whether the Fair Trade Movement is actually achieving its goals. Contributors: Julia Smith, Mark Moberg, Catherine Ziegler , Sarah Besky, Sarah M. Lyon, Catherine S. Dolan, Patrick C. Wilson, Faidra Papavasiliou, Molly Doane, Kathy M’Closkey, Jane Henrici

The idea of fair trade in a global economy is central to contemporary debates over neoliberalism, globalization and the rule of the free market. But what are the coordinates of the fair trade moment; what sort of alternative does it offer for producers and consumers? Daniel Jaffee is at once a fierce proponent of fair trade but also a critical voice. How, he asks, can fair trade coffee be in and against the market? With one foot in the Central American coffee fincas and the other in the intellectual world of Karl Polanyi and his disciples, Daniel Jaffee has on offer a very heady brew. Coffee and Community: Maya Farmers and Fair Trade Markets

Coffee and Community: Maya Farmers and Fair Trade Markets

$32.5

We are told that simply by sipping our morning cup of organic, fair-trade coffee we are encouraging environmentally friendly agricultural methods, community development, fair prices, and shortened commodity chains. But what is the reality for producers, intermediaries, and consumers? This ethnographic analysis of fair-trade coffee analyzes the collective action and combined efforts of fair-trade network participants to construct a new economic reality. Focusing on La Voz Que Clama en el Desierto—a cooperative in San Juan la Laguna, Guatemala—and its relationships with coffee roasters, importers, and certifiers in the United States, Coffee and Community argues that while fair trade does benefit small coffee-farming communities, it is more flawed than advocates and scholars have acknowledged. However, through detailed ethnographic fieldwork with the farmers and by following the product, fair trade can be understood and modified to be more equitable. This book will be of interest to students and academics in anthropology, ethnology, Latin American studies, and labor studies, as well as economists, social scientists, policy makers, fair-trade advocates, and anyone interested in globalization and the realities of fair trade.

Confessions of an Eco-Sinner: Tracking Down the Sources of My Stuff

Confessions of an Eco-Sinner: Tracking Down the Sources of My Stuff

$16

Where does everything in our daily lives come from? The clothes on our backs, the computers on our desks, the cabinets in our kitchens, and the food behind their doors? Under what conditions-environmental and social-are they harvested or manufactured? Veteran science journalist Fred Pearce set off to find out, and the resulting 100,000-mile journey took him to the end of his street and across the planet to more than twenty countries. Pearce deftly shows us the hidden worlds that sustain a Western lifestyle, and he does it by examining the sources of everything in his own life; as an ordinary citizen of the Western world, he, like all of us, is an “eco-sinner.” In Confessions of an Eco-Sinner, Pearce surveys his home and then launches on a global tour to track down, among other things, the Tanzanians who grow and harvest his fair-trade coffee (which isn’t as fair as one might hope), the Central American plantations that grow his daily banana (a treat that may disappear forever), the women in the Bangladeshi sweatshops who sew his jeans, the Chinese factory cities where the world’s computers are made, and the African afterlife for old cell phones. It’s a fascinating portrait, by turns sobering and hopeful, of the effects the world’s more than 6 billion inhabitants-all eating, consuming, making-have on our planet, and of the working and living conditions of the people who produce most of these goods.

Fair Trade Coffee Is Increasing In Popularity

Many consumers are now making the conscious decision to purchase only fair trade coffee.  As a matter of fact, the fair trade movement has been on the rise over the last ten years.  Due to the increasing demand set forth by customers who want to purchase fair trade products, the larger coffee retailers have taken notice and begun to make it more available to the masses.

Fair trade coffee allows for a fair business relationship between the farmers and the companies that make money from the sale of the coffee.  The reason why this movement is so important is because of the fact that it enables the farmers to get a fair price for their coffee.  Thanks to these practices, it is now more common for farmers and their families to earn a fair wage for their daily efforts in cultivating a product that we enjoy on a daily basis.

There are several conditions that must be met in order for coffee to become certified as fair trade.  First of all, the price paid for the coffee has to be high enough to cover not only the farmers’ production costs, but they also need to have some left over in order to sustain a living.

In addition to that, there must also be sufficient advancement opportunities for the employees working on the farms.  The farmers also have to make sure that they are engaging in farming practices that are environmentally friendly.  This movement is also important because it keeps women and children from being exploited in developing countries.

In order for the coffee to be considered fair trade, there must be a fair business exchange between the farmers and the companies that purchase their products.  In addition to that, the farmers are able to create long term business relationships due to the fact that there must be a contract signed for 1-10 years.  This also allows the farmers to obtain credit through the country of the buyer.  The business transaction must also be totally transparent so that it can always be monitored.

You will know that you are purchasing coffee that has been certified as fair trade when you see the seal of approval from the Fair Trade Federation.  This is an association that only follows fair trade principles.  If you see their logo on a product you can rest assured that the product you are purchasing is from a company that is only committed to following fair trade standards.  In order for a product to be considered fair trade it has to be inspected thoroughly first.  Coffee is not the only product that can be purchased through fair trade practices.  There are several different food products that may carry the fair trade seal.

The growers of the coffee that you drink may be receiving an extremely small percentage of the money that you are paying for it.  If you want to make sure that the farmers are getting their fair share of the profits, make sure that you only purchase fair trade coffee from now on.
