Along Amsterdam’s Waterfront $9.49 In New York, it’s Williamsburg and the Meatpacking District; in London and Barcelona it’s the docklands. Everywhere you look, the light and space created for heavy industry are being repurposed for residential life and services: where once coffee was shipped, coffee is served. A two-decade makeover of the southern bank of Amsterdam’s IJ inlet has seen disused shipping wharfs, dockside warehouses and industrial estates replaced by a new urban zone, nestled into the historic city center. Densely stacked apartment blocks, offices and businesses have been joined by cultural institutions, restaurants and schools, in a combination of new and old building stock. The architectural guide Along the IJ is the first full survey of development in areas historically connected with the harbor. Its texts on housing typologies, infrastructure, gentrification and recreation are accompanied by eight architectural routes documented in photographs, drawings and texts, which take in more than 200 projects. |

Among The Ibos Of Nigeria $20.75 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER II THE IBO COUNTRY In 1900, Onitsha had not aspired to anything approaching its present importance, and it retained much of its primitive simplicity. The commercial centre of the district was at Abutshi, two or three miles down-stream, and the administrative quarters, first of the Royal Niger Co., and later of the Government, were at Asapa, on the western side of the river. To the north of the town, following the left bank of the Nkissi stream, on the site now covered with Government buildings, a large coffee plantation was laid out. Of the surrounding country, even of that comparatively near the settlement, but little was known. The existing maps were useless as none contained reliable data, the names inserted being based upon reports and conjectures. Some names were curious e.g. ” Akpam ” and ” Nri.” The latter certainly is a name well known over a considerable portion of the Ibo country. It is the name of a small town which is the headquarters of a priestly cult whose special functions are connected with the coronation of kings, hence “nri” men (priests) being travellers, were met with frequently. When asked whence they came the answer was a wave of the hand towards the east, and thus the name was given, in mistake, to the whole country lying east of Onitsha. It is only during the last few years, i.e. since the British Government assumed the administration, that appreciable progress has been made in opening up the interior districts. At the time of my landing at Onitsha there was anattractive field for investigation in which the native could be studied in his primitive environment. The subsequent years have been equally interesting, but from anotherstandpoint, viz., that of a spectator watching a nation passing through a period of transition. The process |

Bluebird: A Memoir $0.99 For Vesna Maric, the war begins when the machine gun fire in the distance sounds like a sewing machine. As it comes closer, her family’s anxiety grows, prompting them to send her and her sister to Britain via bus. The Bosnian women who board the bus for the four-day trip are in turmoil: Gordana, a 52-year-old who looks like Xena the Warrior Princess, reveals through tears that she is pregnant and must leave her husband in Bosnia; their only English-language interpreter descends into a nervous breakdown; and the weak English coffee only compounds Maric’s confusion and exhaustion. They arrive in the vivid green of England’s Lake District, greeted by volunteers who carry naive prejudices about refugee behavior and appearance. Unbeknownst to the altruistic British welcoming party, Maric and her fellow travelers are accustomed to a comfortable, middle-class life, and their new “refugee” status comes as a shock.Maric’s humor and tenderness carry the reader through her love affair with a local boy and her eventual moves to Exeter and Hull. Interweaved are stories of other refugees — stories of love, escape, and burdens of the “refugee” label. |

Chimney Rock Elevage 2007 $85 In 1990, we created the first vintage of our proprietarily named red wine blend: Chimney Rock Elevage. This French word literally means rearing or breeding. When applied to wine, it describes the transition that takes place between fermentation and bottling, suggesting that the winemaker’s role is that of a proud parent, who guides the young wine through its critical journey from barrel to bottle. A beautiful Bordeaux style blend from the renowned Stag’s Leap District of Napa Valley. Ruby red in color with a dense purple hue. Licorice and cassis dominate the aromas but there are delicate hints of mint, coffee and vanilla. Smooth and round in the palate this wine has density with elegance, power and grace. Long finish with balanced acidity. |

ClanDance $2.95 A life saga, a sweet old-fashioned love story, ClanDance is a tale of two families battered by adversity, of two people burying their hearts in their work. And so these two mid-thirties workaholics find each other and struggle through obstacles – miscommunications, travel schedules, family secrets and intrusions, and insecurities borne of tragedy – to carve out a relationship. Claire Carragan, a corporate law attorney whose life has become putting together the largest restructuring in corporate history, catches the attention of Dennis Kerrigan, an investment banker who works in the same office building. Within moments, as he overhears her almost hostile banter with a co-worker, he realizes that this fiery, attractive young woman is the solution to his lonely, meaningless life. A cup of coffee, a dinner date, and an invitation to a day at the racetrack all play out shyly, slowly; both afraid of moving too fast, both just struggling free of their emotionally battering histories. Amid the uncompromising pace of their business lives they find a common ground, the family – clan – dance contests at a Cape Cod summer town. From an errant priest, a murdered child, a parent hazed in denial, the seething resentments of a child lost in the shuffle, and a district attorney with the strangest secret of all, they learn that ClanDance is perhaps a euphemism for the dances that families do to each other, rather than with each other. It could be anyone’s story; people going about their lives, hoping for the best, hoping for love, hoping for hope’s sake. And they’re almost there. Just minutes from living happily ever after, 9/11 strikes toprove that life is so full of you-never-knows. |

Constructing Savannah’s cityscape, 1837–1854. $49.99 Ask just about anyone what comes to mind when they think of Savannah, Georgia, and their response is likely to be her squares. It does not matter if they have visited the city or not, as images of the historic district fill the pages of coffee table books and interiors magazines, as well as appear on television home improvement shows and travel programs. “Savannah” means lush squares of live oak, Spanish moss, and fragrant flowers, each one surrounded by elegant townhouses neatly finished in pale shades of stucco with dark-colored shutters and decorative ironwork. These spaces seem beyond the touch of time, where the past pleasantly lives on through graciously appointed historic homes and picturesque monuments to military heroes and religious leaders. The actual history of Savannah’s squares, meanwhile, remains as obscured by sweetly scented jasmine as the railings running along her patterned brick walks.;The 1830s to the 1850s witnessed tremendous growth in cities across the United States—Savannah, Georgia, was no exception. With geographic and demographic expansion came equally dramatic cultural changes expressed in the built environment. Using Savannah’s ground rent books, city tax assessments, and local and federal census data, this thesis examines two transformative moments in Savannah’s development. In 1837, her merchant-planter elite wielded its political, economic and social influence to maintain and expand a central district of squares on city-owned lands. Sixteen years later, the failed attempt to construct a new hotel during the summer of 1853 revealed rifts and tensions existing within this group over their visions for Savannah and their place in the cityscape. A century after the city’s founding, Savannah’s squares did not promote agrarian equality as Georgia’s founders intended. Oglethorpe’s town plan survived as long as it could incorporate new standards of urban living, succeeding as an exclusive residential area even as it posed significant |
