By Marie BergerISBN: 978-1-84747-189-5Published: 2007Pages: 184Key Themes: DescriptionThis emotional turbulent and poignant book tells the story of Marie Berger’s dicovery that she was adopted. Marie only discovered this fact when her mother passed away and she cuaght a glimpse of hert birth certificate. The book decribes Marie’s childhood and chronicles how she felt in finding that she was adopted. This is an intensely moving and excellently written book.About the AuthorMarie Berger was born in May 1945 in Reading, Berkshire. She trained to become a teacher and is also a qualified masseuse. She is now an author by profession and lives with her husband and her children in Lincoln. She is fond of travelling, foreign languages, pastel drawing and of course her writing.Book ExtractOn the doormat is a letter. I pick it up. I don’t recognise the handwriting. It’s postmarked New York, United States of America.I only know of one person who lives there. And it couldn’t possibly be from her.could it?Feverishly I tear open the envelope, unfold the notepaper. My mind’s in a whirl. It’s impossible to take in the words. They swim across my line of vision. The bits I manage to read here and there don’t make sense.I don’t know how long I’ve been standing here mesmerised. My mind’s blank. The neat script is dancing before my eyes. This can’t be happening. It must be a dream.I blink rapidly, shake my head, and try to focus on reality. But there’s no way I can get a grip on myself standing like a zombie here in the hallway. I must get out.I put on my coat, wanderbewildered into the first café I come to. I sit in a corner, order a coffee, sip the hot liquid. I can’t stop shivering.I hold my breath, force myself to start at the beginning, concentrate on each word. I begin to read.Dear Marie Teresa,I really don’t know how to begin.

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that is a psychoactive stimulant drug. Caffeine was discovered by a German chemist, Friedrich Ferdinand Runge, in 1819. He coined the term kaffein, a chemical compound in coffee (the German word for which is Kaffee), which in English became caffeine (and changed to Koffein in German). Caffeine is found in varying quantities in the beans, leaves, and fruit of some plants, where it acts as a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects feeding on the plants. It is most commonly consumed by humans in infusions extracted from the bean of the coffee plant and the leaves of the tea bush, as well as from various foods and drinks containing products derived from the kola nut. Other sources include yerba mate, guarana berries, and the Yaupon Holly. In humans, caffeine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant, having the effect of temporarily warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness. Beverages containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, and energy drinks, enjoy great popularity. Caffeine is the world’s most

 Binding Up the Wounds

Binding Up the Wounds

$135.58

Standifer, who served in the 94th Infantry Division in western Germany, the Sudetenland, and Bavaria in the first year of occupation, chronicles that unique and chaotic time from the viewpoint of a typical GI. Germany was an epic landscape of human need, and cities lay in ruins. But the war was over, light and laughter were once again possible, and, as Standifer recalls, we had a ball during that first year . Among the things he experienced or witnessed were black-market operations large and small (American cigarettes served as a universal currency, and a few ounces of mess-hall grease or used coffee grounds were valuable commodities); the spectacle of gung-ho officers attempting to turn combat troops into spit-and-polish paraders; the exploitative games played between American soldiers and German women; a gut-wrenching visit to a displaced persons camp; and the difficulties involved in guarding captured soldiers who were no longer the enemy. Perhaps most revealing, and often surprising, are the attitudes Standifer discovered among ordinary Germans toward the war, the Nazis, the Hitler times in general – not only during the occupation, but also decades later when he revisited Germany and spoke with elderly survivors of those times. For there are really two voices telling the tale of Binding Up the Wounds. One is that of the combat-hardened but otherwise naive twenty-year-old who lived the experiences. The other is that of the author as retired college professor looking back over half a century and puzzling out what those experiences meant for himself, for America, and for human-kind.

 Grandma's Remedies

Grandma’s Remedies

$7.83

Recalling the homemade remedies that families used long before modern medicines became so widely available, this collection brings together remedies that have been gathered from dusty medicine chests found in attics, recalled from childhoods long past, or discovered in family archives and libraries. In addition to the suggestions–including those claiming that drinking two cups of strong black coffee will alleviate an asthma attack or that chewing toasted fennel seeds will help combat indigestion–the guide also paints a vivid portrait of the world of grandparents and great-grandparents, showing how inventive and resourceful they were with the materials at hand.

Grandma’s Remedies: A Guide to Traditional Cures and Treatments from Mustard Poultices to Rosehip Syrup

$29.95

Long before modern medicines became so widely available, families treated everyday illnesses with homemade remedies. Reused and refined year after year, they were handed down through the generations then lovingly copied into personal “receipt” books. This beguiling collection brings together remedies that have been gathered from dusty medicine chests found in attics, recalled from childhoods long past, or discovered in family archives and libraries. Many of them are surprisingly effective. Did you know, for example, that drinking two cups of strong black coffee will alleviate an asthma attack? Or that chewing toasted fennel seeds will help combat indigestion? Or that rosehip syrup is a terrific source of vitamin C? More than a guide to these traditional treatments, it’s also a vivid portrait of the world of our grandparents and great-grandparents. It shows how inventive and resourceful they were with the materials near to hand, how they made the most of everything in the pantry, and how it was the women of the household who, despite being barred from the medical profession, were relied on to safeguard family health. In these days of antibiotics and painkillers, it’s easy to forget how people survived when all they had to rely on was a garden, a kitchen, and a healthy dose of common sense.

Groundhog Day / So I Married An Axe Murderer (Blu-ray) (Widescreen)

Groundhog Day / So I Married An Axe Murderer (Blu-ray) (Widescreen)

$14.5

“Groundhog Day” – Bill Murray is at his wry, wisecracking best in this riotous romantic comedy about a weatherman caught in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life. Teamed with a relentlessly cheerful producer (Andie MacDowell) and a smart-aleck cameraman (Chris Elliott), TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities. But on his way out of town, Phil is caught in a giant blizzard, which he failed to predict, and finds himself stuck in small-town hell. Just when things couldn’t get any worse, they do. Phil wakes the next morning to find it’s “Groundhog Day” all over again… and again… and again. “So I Married An Axe Murderer” – Comedy sensation Mike Myers stars with Nancy Travis in this hatchet-driven romantic comedy about a wedlock-shy coffee house poet who finally meets the perfect woman. When it comes to love, Charlie Mackenzie (Myers) has had his share of bad luck: Sherrie was a klepto – Charlie still can’t find his cat. Jill was unemployed – but Charlie knew she really worked for the Mafia. Pam smelled like soup – beef vegetable soup. Good thing for Charlie these shortcomings became apparent, if only to him. Good thing for Charlie he discovered the truth before things went too far – before he stumbled into MARRIAGE! Because to Charlie the “M” word is just one step away from the fate foretold in that chilling phrase: “Till death do us part.” When Charlie meets Harriet Michaels (Travis) everything changes. Harriet’s not like the others. She’s smart, sexy, and crazy about Charlie. This time Charlie is determined to overcome the fears that sabotaged his past relationships. This time, he’s ready for some commitment. Sure, Harriet may have her shortcomings – but so what? After all those other women, what’s the worst she could be? An axe murderer. Hot Coffee Minigame Controversy

Hot Coffee Minigame Controversy

$59.99

The Hot Coffee minigame controversy concerns a normally inaccessible minigame in the 2004 video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, developed by Rockstar North. Public awareness of the existence of the minigame arrived with the release of the Hot Coffee mod, created for the version released in 2005 for Windows-based computers. This mod enables access to the minigame. The minigame portrays sexual intercourse between the main character and his in-game girlfriend. The name of the mod is derived from the girlfriend’s offer for the main character to come into her home for “coffee”-a euphemism for sex. Although the “Hot Coffee” minigame was completely disabled and its existence was only highlighted after the mod’s release for the PC version in June 9, 2005,[1] the assets for the minigame were also discovered in both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the game, and people found ways to enable the minigame via console video game hacking tools. By the middle of July 2005, the minigame’s discovery attracted considerable controversy from lawmakers and politicians, prompting the game to be re-rated as an adult game, and pulled from some shelves.

Eusebio de Haro Espinosa was a young man from Mexico who slipped over the U.S. border into Texas and was desperate for a drink of water when he happened upon the home of Samuel Blackwood. Later the same day, seventy-year-old Blackwood shot and killed Espinosa; some reports say Blackwood and his wife were chasing the young man in their car when he was killed, while Blackwood’s friends and family insist the death was the result of an accident. When Blackwood’s case came to trial, it was discovered that part of his initial indictment paperwork had gone missing — including a key passage concerning weapons — and eventually the elderly man was released with a suspended sentence, while Espinosa’s family insist racism is to blame for their son’s death and the failure to bring Blackwood to justice. Filmmakers John Sheedy, David Eckenrode and John Eckenrode examine the Eusebio de Haro Espinosa case in El Inmigrante, a documentary which focuses on the realities of illegal immigration in America — overworked border guards who feel more compassion than anger towards their charges, amateur vigilantes who discuss their fears of who may be coming into America, and Espinosa’s family in Mexico who talk about the young man’s death and what prompted him to leave his home. El Inmigrante was screened as part of the 2006 New York Latino Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide. “Narcoleptic Druken Daydreams” a 9-minute Featurette From Outtakes Covering Two Stories on the Border, “Just Coffee” Featurette, “The De Haro’s View the Film” Featurette, Photo Gallery, Poster Progression Gallery, Brief History of the Border, Spanish & English Subtitles, 16:9 Widescreen.
