E Is for Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. It lies in East Africa, set in a landscape of mountains and rivers – and the Blue Nile, which flows into the River Nile, rises here in Lake Tana. Our wildlife includes giraffes, elephants, zebras, crocodiles, hyenas, lions and all kinds of beautiful birds. The country is rich in history. It has an important place in both the Christian and Muslim religions, with all kinds of colourful festivals. Thousands of people visit our ancient churches and mosques every year. Ethiopian people follow many different traditions, make music in a variety of ways and speak several different languages. We love to dance, sing and have fun, especially on public holidays! Our food is spicy and delicious. The coffee bean originated in this country, and we hold a special coffee ceremony in which the aroma of roasted coffee, the incense we burn, and the pleasure of meeting each other all make for a unique experience.E is for Ethiopia is the latest in the wide-ranging photographic World Alphabet series. The text and photographs in this book are by a group of young photographers in Ethiopia whose work is supported by the UK aid agency CAFOD, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development.

Excerpt: Logba is a Kwa language spoken in the south-eastern Ghana by approximately 7 500 people. The Logba people call themselves and their language Ikpana, which means defenders of truth. Logba is different from Lukpa of Togo and Benin, which is also sometimes referred to as Logba. The first published treatment of Logba was a short grammar by Diedrich Hermann Westermann (1903). Westermann included Logba in his group of Togo Restsprachen (Togo Remnant languages), a terminology adopted by several subsequent researchers. Dakubu and Ford (1988) renamed this cluster the Central Togo languages but since Ring (1995) they are commonly referred to as Ghana Togo Mountain languages. The about fourteen Ghana Togo Mountain languages are part of the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo phylum. A girl sells produce in LogbaThe Logba people live in the Volta Region of Ghana, east of the Volta Lake in the mountains of the Ghana-Togo borderland. Most Logba towns and villages are situated along the trunk road from Accra to Hohoe. They include the following settlements: Wuinta, Akusame, Adiveme, Andokfe, Adzakoe, Alakpeti, Klikpo, and Tota. Tota is located high in the Ghana Togo Mountains to the east of the Accra-Hohoe road. Alakpeti is the commercial centre of Logba, while Klikpo is traditionally the seat of the head of the Logba people. The Logba people are primarily subsistence farmers, producing cassava, maize, yams and forest fruits, supplemented by cash crops like cocoa, coffee and sawn mahogany logs. The Logba area is known for its scenery, which includes waterfalls, cliffs, and limest… More:

World culture has been enriched by many musical, art, food, and fashion traditions that originated in Africa. With huge photos and a loose, fun layout, this book helps kids discover that such American things as jazz music, the banjo, and the Charleston actually had their roots in Africa. Africa also brought the world such foods as coffee, sesame seeds, and yams; and such fashions as cornrows and kente cloth. The book explains the meaning and purpose of masks and other distinctive African art forms, and explores how Africa is the native habitat of such exotic animals as lions, hippos, gorillas, cheetahs, and zebras. The back matter includes instructions on how to make a mancala board (an African game), and how to say hello in several different African languages.
