By Marie BergerISBN: 978-1-84747-189-5Published: 2007Pages: 184Key Themes: DescriptionThis emotional turbulent and poignant book tells the story of Marie Berger’s dicovery that she was adopted. Marie only discovered this fact when her mother passed away and she cuaght a glimpse of hert birth certificate. The book decribes Marie’s childhood and chronicles how she felt in finding that she was adopted. This is an intensely moving and excellently written book.About the AuthorMarie Berger was born in May 1945 in Reading, Berkshire. She trained to become a teacher and is also a qualified masseuse. She is now an author by profession and lives with her husband and her children in Lincoln. She is fond of travelling, foreign languages, pastel drawing and of course her writing.Book ExtractOn the doormat is a letter. I pick it up. I don’t recognise the handwriting. It’s postmarked New York, United States of America.I only know of one person who lives there. And it couldn’t possibly be from her.could it?Feverishly I tear open the envelope, unfold the notepaper. My mind’s in a whirl. It’s impossible to take in the words. They swim across my line of vision. The bits I manage to read here and there don’t make sense.I don’t know how long I’ve been standing here mesmerised. My mind’s blank. The neat script is dancing before my eyes. This can’t be happening. It must be a dream.I blink rapidly, shake my head, and try to focus on reality. But there’s no way I can get a grip on myself standing like a zombie here in the hallway. I must get out.I put on my coat, wanderbewildered into the first café I come to. I sit in a corner, order a coffee, sip the hot liquid. I can’t stop shivering.I hold my breath, force myself to start at the beginning, concentrate on each word. I begin to read.Dear Marie Teresa,I really don’t know how to begin.

Absolute Certainty of Life after Death

Absolute Certainty of Life after Death

$0.92

THIS IS THE STORY OF TWO MEN. ONE VERY RICH. ONE VERY POOR. THEY BOTH DIED.Most people are intrigued by the subject of life after death. Whether in a classroom, at church, or talking with a friend over a cup of coffee, the same questions are asked over and over again…”What happens the moment you die?”"Where do we go?”"Will we see our loved ones in heaven?”"Do dead people know what’s going on here on earth?”"How can a loving and merciful God send people to hell?”Author Don Wilton looks at these questions and more in The Absolute Certainty of Life after Death, a modern retelling of the Biblical story of the rich man and Lazarus. This compelling story chronicles that choices and fate of two very different, but ordinary men. Set in Texas and New Orleans, this fictional story traces the contrasting lives of Albright A. Rhodes, a multi-millionaire and Billy Bob Malkmus, a homeless beggar, from birth to death….and beyond.

 Binding Up the Wounds

Binding Up the Wounds

$135.58

Standifer, who served in the 94th Infantry Division in western Germany, the Sudetenland, and Bavaria in the first year of occupation, chronicles that unique and chaotic time from the viewpoint of a typical GI. Germany was an epic landscape of human need, and cities lay in ruins. But the war was over, light and laughter were once again possible, and, as Standifer recalls, we had a ball during that first year . Among the things he experienced or witnessed were black-market operations large and small (American cigarettes served as a universal currency, and a few ounces of mess-hall grease or used coffee grounds were valuable commodities); the spectacle of gung-ho officers attempting to turn combat troops into spit-and-polish paraders; the exploitative games played between American soldiers and German women; a gut-wrenching visit to a displaced persons camp; and the difficulties involved in guarding captured soldiers who were no longer the enemy. Perhaps most revealing, and often surprising, are the attitudes Standifer discovered among ordinary Germans toward the war, the Nazis, the Hitler times in general – not only during the occupation, but also decades later when he revisited Germany and spoke with elderly survivors of those times. For there are really two voices telling the tale of Binding Up the Wounds. One is that of the combat-hardened but otherwise naive twenty-year-old who lived the experiences. The other is that of the author as retired college professor looking back over half a century and puzzling out what those experiences meant for himself, for America, and for human-kind.

Coffee and Repartee

$28.71

This is the story of what happens when men who think themselves smarter than they are face off against a man who’s smarter than he seems. Formal credentials and personal pretensions to mental superiority all crumble in the face of precisely the right come-back, time after time.

Crapshoot Investing: How Tech-Savvy Traders and Clueless Regulators Turned the Stock Market into a Casino

Crapshoot Investing: How Tech-Savvy Traders and Clueless Regulators Turned the Stock Market into a Casino

$11.9

“The government’s master planners have done it again! Usurping the role of ‘invisible hand,’ they have inadvertently destabilized the stock market and frightened off long-term investors. McTague sardonically chronicles how this happened and the new dangers the meddling has created for the investing public.”–Larry Kudlow, Host, The Kudlow Report, CNBC“Jim McTague is the best, because he refuses to report like the rest. He was the first to report in the dot-com boom that earnings should matter, and in the real estate boom, that simple math matters. Some might call that being the skunk at the picnic. Pity we don’t have more skunks.”–Neil Cavuto, Host, Your World with Neil Cavuto, Fox News Channel“Jim McTague presents a ferocious verdict on the state of the markets after the Flash Crash of 2010. It takes a strong mind to read the anecdotes and reporting in Crapshoot Investing and not break down laughing. Cash under the mattress or in a coffee can? Far more secure than the ticker tape.”–John Batchelor, Host, The John Batchelor Show, WABC Radio Network“This fascinating and compelling book is a must-read for anyone that invests in the stock market. Jim McTague pulls no punches in telling the alarming story of how these markets have been transformed into risky casinos. If you plan to be one of the winners, this is a book for you.”–James R. Barth, Lowder Eminent Scholar in Finance, Auburn University“This book is like a fast, furious, and sometimes airborne motorcycle ride. It hurtles along, avoiding the obstacles that lie in the path of investors, devilishly constructed by Wall Street and haplessly beyond the ken of the regulators. It is not a book that makes you feel good about your 401K, but you will laugh aloud often. –Llewellyn King, Host, White House

 Crossing The Equal Sign

Crossing The Equal Sign

$14.95

Marion Cohen is equally mathematician and poet. Using mathematical metaphor, she touches deeply into issues of life and heart. In each poem she crosses the equal sign on many levels, beginning with visible points, lines, numbers. crossing over to life’s invisible-yet-tangible delights and frustrations. and crossing back again with insights gleaned from these reflections.(Barbara E. Reynolds, SDS, Mathematics and Computer Science,Cardinal Stritch University)Marion is one of the few poets who can successfully explore the join between the literary and the mathematical sensibilities, and no one does it as well as she.Jet Foncannon, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, Drexel UniversityMillay wrote that “Euclid alone has looked on Beauty bare,” but Marion Cohen looks on Beauty doing a slow strip-tease. Her poetry aches and anguishes and anticipates as she chronicles what it is like to almost – but not quite – (but perhaps truly) unveil Mathematics and gaze upon her lovely face.Annalisa Crannell, Department of Mathematics, Franklin and Marshall College, Co-author, Writing Projects for Mathematics Courses: Crushed Clowns, Cars, And Coffee to Go.Far from being a cold, calculating robot, ‘a mathematician who is not something of a poet will never be a first-rate mathematician’ (Weierstrass, 19th century). In this delightful book, Marion Cohen reminds us of this oft-forgotten human and emotional side of mathematics.Gregory Chaitin, Author of Meta Math! Empire of Ice Cream

Empire of Ice Cream

$24.95

Mixing the mundane with the metaphysical, the pairings of the everyday and the extraordinary in this collection of short fiction yield supernatural results—a young musician perceives another world while drinking coffee; a fairy chronicles his busy life in a sandcastle during the changing tide; a demonic 16th-century chess set shows up in a New Jersey bar; and Charon, the boatman of hell, takes a few days of vacation. Storylines both conventional and outlandish reveal humdrum routines as menacing and imaginary worlds as perfectly familiar. Allusions to authors such as Edgar Allan Poe and Jules Verne reinforce the fantasy tradition in these tales, while understated humor and moments of sadness add a quirky unpredictability. Each story is followed by a brief afterword that details its genesis, offering insight into the many autobiographical elements found within.

Everyday Life and Consumer Culture in Eighteenth-Century Damascus

Everyday Life and Consumer Culture in Eighteenth-Century Damascus

$70.48

Damascus was for centuries a center of learning and commerce. Drawing on the city’s dazzling literary tradition-a rich collection of poetry, chronicles, travel accounts, and biographical dictionaries-as well as on Islamic court records, James Grehan explores the material culture of premodern Damascus, reconstructing the economic infrastructure, social customs, and private consumer habits that dominated this cosmopolitan hub in the 1700s. He sketches a lively history of diet, furniture, fashion, and other aspects of daily life, providing an unusual and intimate account of the choices, constraints, and compromises that defined consumer behavior. Coffee, tobacco, and light firearms had arisen as new luxury items in preceding centuries, and Grehan traces the usage of such goods in order to get a picture of the overall standard of living in the premodern Middle East. He looks particularly at how wealth and poverty were defined and how consumption patterns expressed notions of taste, class, and power, illuminating the prominent role played by Damascus in shaping the economy and culture of the Middle East. In assessing the magnitude of social change in modern times, we have few benchmarks from the period preceding the onset of modernity in the nineteenth century. This informative study will make possible more precise cultural and economic comparisons between different parts of the world as it stood on the brink of a radically new economic and political order. The book’s focus on a little-examined period and region will appeal to scholars and students of urban social history and Arab popular culture.

First Comes Love, then Comes Malaria: How a Peace Corps Poster Boy Won My Heart and A Third World Adventure Changed My Life

First Comes Love, then Comes Malaria: How a Peace Corps Poster Boy Won My Heart and A Third World Adventure Changed My Life

$9.99

In this laugh-out-loud funny memoir, a pampered city girl falls head over little black heels in love with a Peace Corps poster boy and follows him —literally–to the ends of the earth. Eve Brown always thought she would join the Peace Corps someday, although she secretly worried about life without sushi, frothy coffee drinks and air conditioning.  But with college diploma in hand, it was time to put up or shut up. So with some ambivalence she arrives at the Peace Corps office–sporting her best safari chic attire –to casually look into the steps one might take if one were to become a global humanitarian, a la Angelina Jolie.  But when Eve meets John, her dashing young Peace Corps recruiter, all her ambivalence flies out the window. She absolutely must join the Peace Corps – and win John’s heart in the process. Off to Ecuador she goes and – after a year in the jungle – back to the States she runs, vowing to stay within easy reach of a decaf cappuccino for the rest of her days. But life had other plans.  Just as she’s getting reacquainted with the joys of toilet paper, John gets a job with CARE and Eve must decide if she’s up for life in another third world outpost. Before you can say, "pass the malaria prophylaxis," the couple heads off to Uganda, and the fun really begins—if one can call having rats in your toilet fun. Fortunately, in Eve’s case one certainly can, because to her, every experience is an adventure to be embraced and these pages come alive with all of the alternatively poignant and uproarious details. With wit and candor, First Comes Love, then Comes Malaria chronicles Eve’s misadventures as an aspiring do-gooder. From intestinal parasites to getting caught in a civil war, culture clashes to unexpected friendships, here is an honest and laugh-out-loud funny look at the search for love and purpose—from a woman who finds both in the
