Green Tea Caffeine
Many people are not clear about green tea caffeine levels, particularly with it’s widely publicised benefits. For clarity all teas including green tea contain caffeine, however, green tea caffeine levels are much lower unless the tea has been decaffeinated. The quantity of caffeine in any tea will depend on the number of tea leaves used during the brewing, the time the leaves are left to impart caffeine into the brew and the volume of liquid drunk.
You will discover that green tea contains in the region of 36mg of caffeine per cup in contrast to that of black tea which has in the region of 60mg per cup. In this example a cup size is 250ml or 8oz. When you compare this to the caffeine levels in coffee which are approximately 95mg per cup, then green tea can definately be thought of as having lower caffeine levels.A number of people will use green tea leaves to infuse a number of cups of tea, experiments carried out by the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at Auburn University, AL uncovered that the overall green tea caffeine levels in the first to the third brews were 69%, 23%, and 8%, respectively.
Many of us may not want to consume products that contain caffeine and will often decide on using decaffeinated tea, if this is the case, then it is worth being aware that the process of decaffeination not only removes caffeine but impacts upon the level of anti-oxidants in green tea. So, if you are drinking green tea to take advantages of the benefits of polphenols, also referred to as catechins, then be clear that decaffeinated tea will have reduced levels of these compounds. It is also worth knowing that the decaffeination process involves chemicals and there are some indications that traces of these may remain in the tea, therefore if your choice is to use a decaffeinated product then you should choose one which has been decaffeinated using water or carbon dioxide. Research conducted at UCLA reported that decaffeinated tea had in the region of half the level of anti-oxidants of standard caffeinated green tea.
Women often opt for drinking green tea when they are pregnant to reap its benefits and because of its lower caffeine levels than other drinks, such as coffee. It is important to point out that pregnant women should keep their caffeine intake to no more than 200mg per day from all food sources such as tea, chocolate. As a result this means green tea is a really good option with a normal cup containing only 36mg of caffeine and helps prenant women to manage their caffeine levels efectively.
To control the level of caffeine you consume, you should think about the following measures:
– Avoid using green tea bags which are known to have higher caffeine levels, also they are usually of a lower quality than loose tea.
– Notice your caffeine tolderance and if unsure build up slowly.
- Throw away the first infusion as this holds the highest level of caffeine.
- Use only half the number of tea leaves, threefore reducing the strength of the tea.
